The FDA has approved lixisenatide (Sanofi), a short-acting injectable GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist, for once-daily treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes, both alone (Adlyxin) and in a fixed-ratio combination with insulin glargine (Soliqua 100/33). Lixisenatide has been available since 2013 in many other countries as Lyxumia. It is the fifth GLP-1 receptor agonist to be approved in the US.

The FDA has amended its Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Paxlovid (Pfizer), the investigational oral antiviral drug nirmatrelvir copackaged with oral ritonavir, to allow for it to be prescribed by licensed pharmacists in certain situations. Paxlovid is authorized for oral treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in high-risk outpatients ≥12 years old who weigh at least 40 kg. NIH guidelines list it as the treatment of choice for COVID-19 in high-risk adult outpatients.

Diclofenac sodium (Voltaren - Geigy), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) available in some countries since 1974, was recently introduced in the USA for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. It is being promoted as 'The number one prescribed antiarthritic in the world.'

Nicardipine (Cardene - Syntex), a dihydropyridine calcium-entry blocker structurally related to nifedipine (Procardia; Adalat), was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for oral treatment of angina and hypertension. Advertisements for the drug claim that nicardipine is more vasoselective; than other calcium-channel blockers and does not depress myocardial contractility.

The FDA has approved a 5% ophthalmic solution of lifitegrast (Xiidra – Shire), a lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) antagonist, for treatment of the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. Lifitegrast is the first LFA-1 antagonist to be approved for any indication in the US.

Carvedilol (Coreg - SmithKline Beecham and Boehringer-Mannheim), a betaadrenergic and alpha-adrenergic blocker approved by the FDA for treatment of hypertension in 1995, but not marketed at that time, has now been approved and marketed for treatment of mild or moderate (NYHA class II or III) heart failure stabilized on other drugs. It is being promoted as an add-on drug that reduces the morbidity and mortality of the disease.
