The FDA has approved Symbravo (Axsome), an oral fixed-dose combination of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) meloxicam and the 5-HT_1B/1D receptor agonist (triptan) rizatriptan (Maxalt, and generics), for acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. It is the second combination of an NSAID and a triptan to be approved for migraine treatment. An oral fixed-dose combination of sumatriptan and naproxen (Treximet, and generics) is approved for use in patients ≥12 years old.

Many different drugs are used for treatment of osteoarthritis pain, but none of them prevent progression of the disease. Nonpharmacologic approaches including weight management, exercise, tai chi, physical therapy, assistive devices, and total joint arthroplasty can also be used. The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) has published new guidelines for the management of osteoarthritis of the hip, hand, and knee.

Drugs for gout are used to reduce the pain and inflammation of acute flares, decrease the frequency of exacerbations, and lower serum urate levels to prevent recurrent flares, development of tophi, and joint damage.

Avandaryl, a new fixed-dose tablet combining the thiazolidinedione rosiglitazone (Avandia) and the sulfonylurea glimepiride (Amaryl, and others), was recently approved by the FDA for treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is approved for patients already taking a combination of rosiglitazone and a sulfonylurea or those not adequately controlled on rosiglitazone or sulfonylurea monotherapy. Formoterol fumarate (Perforomist - Dey), a long-acting beta₂-agonist, was recently approved by the FDA as an inhalation solution for nebulization for maintenance treatment of bronchoconstriction associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Arformoterol (Brovana), the (R, R)-enantiomer of formoterol, was approved earlier this year for the same indication.

Arformoterol tartrate (Brovana - Sepracor), a singleisomer, long-acting beta₂-agonist, has been approved by the FDA as an inhalation solution for nebulization for treatment of bronchoconstriction pulmonary disease (COPD). Arformoterol is the (R,R)-enantiomer of formoterol (Foradil), which is available as a powder for inhalation and was recently also approved as a solution for nebulization (Perforomist - Dey; available fall 2007)

The FDA has approved Clenpiq (Ferring), a low-volume oral solution that contains sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, and anhydrous citric acid, for colon cleansing prior to colonoscopy in adults. The ready-to-drink solution contains the same ingredients as Prepopik, which is supplied as a powder for reconstitution.

The FDA has approved an oral tablet formulation of sodium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, and potassium chloride (Sutab – Braintree) for colon cleansing prior to colonoscopy in adults. A sodium sulfate-based oral solution (Suprep) has been available in the US since 2010. Sutab is the second tablet formulation to be approved for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy; a sodium phosphate-based tablet (OsmoPrep) was approved earlier.

The FDA has approved nirsevimab-alip (Beyfortus – AstraZeneca/Sanofi), a long-acting monoclonal antibody, for the prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) lower respiratory tract disease in neonates and infants born during or entering their first RSV season, and in children ≤24 months old who are at increased risk for severe RSV disease through their second RSV season. Nirsevimab is the first drug to be approved for protection of all infants during their first RSV season.
