Homeopathic drugs characteristically consist of very large dilutions of "proven" substances. Serial dilutions of 1:10 are designated by the Roman numeral X. ColciGel (Gensco), a prescription homeopathic gel containing a 10,000-fold dilution of colchicine (colchicinum 4X), is now being marketed for topical treatment and prophylaxis of gout.

The interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor antagonist tocilizumab (Actemra – Genentech) has been approved by the FDA for IV treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalized adults who are receiving a systemic corticosteroid and require supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Tocilizumab was previously available for this indication under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA); it remains available under an EUA for treatment of children 2-17 years old who are hospitalized with COVID-19 and require oxygen support.

Omlyclo (omalizumab-igec; Celltrion), a biosimilar product interchangeable with the recombinant anti-IgE monoclonal antibody Xolair, has been approved by the FDA for same indications as Xolair (see Table 1). Omlyclo is the first Xolair biosimilar to be approved in the US.

Olsalazine sodium (Dipentum - Pharmacia), a dimer (two molecules linked by an azo bond) of 5-aminosalicylic acid, was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for oral use to maintain remission of ulcerative colitis in adult patients who cannot tolerate sulfasalazine (Azulfidine; and others).

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two new retinoids for treatment of psoriasis. Tazarotene gel 0.05% and 0.1% (Tazorac - Allergan) is being marketed for topical use in patients with stable, mild to moderate plaque psoriasis. Acitretin (Soriatane - Roche) is being promoted for systemic use in severe psoriasis.

Mirvetuximab soravtansine-gynx (Elahere – Immuno-Gen), an antibody-drug conjugate, has received accelerated approval by the FDA for treatment of folate receptor (FR) alpha-positive, platinum-resistant epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer in adults who received 1-3 prior lines of systemic therapy. Accelerated approval was based on the overall response rate and median duration of response.

The FDA has approved Odactra (ALK), a sublingual allergen extract, for immunotherapy in adults 18-65 years old with house dust mite (HDM)-induced allergic rhinitis, with or without conjunctivitis. Odactra is the first sublingual allergen extract to be approved in the US for this indication. Three other sublingual allergen extracts were approved earlier (see Table 1).

Tafasitamab-cxix (Monjuvi – Morphosys), a CD19-directed cytolytic antibody, has received accelerated approval from the FDA for use in combination with lenalidomide (Revlimid) for treatment of relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), not otherwise specified, including DLBCL arising from low grade lymphoma, in adults who are not eligible for autologous stem cell transplant. Accelerated approval was based on overall response rates.

Mepolizumab (Nucala – GSK), a subcutaneously injected interleukin-5 (IL-5) antagonist, has been approved by the FDA for add-on maintenance treatment of adults who have inadequately controlled chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with an eosinophilic phenotype. Mepolizumab is also approved for treatment of asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, and hypereosinophilic syndrome.

The severity and rapid spread of COVID-19 (caused by SARS-CoV-2) have raised questions about the use of some drugs in patients with the disease and whether currently available drugs could be effective in treating it.
