The FDA has approved a 0.15% cream formulation of the phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) inhibitor roflumilast (Zoryve – Arcutis) for topical treatment of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (AD) in patients ≥6 years old. Roflumilast is the second PDE4 inhibitor to be approved in the US for treatment of AD; crisaborole (Eucrisa), which can be used in patients ≥3 months old, was the first. Onapgo (Supernus), a solution for continuous subcutaneous infusion containing the dopamine agonist apomorphine, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of motor fluctuations in adults with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). Subcutaneously injected apomorphine (Apokyn, and generics) has been available for intermittent use for years. Vyalev, a foscarbidopa/foslevodopa solution for subcutaneous infusion, was approved in 2024 for the same indication.

The subcutaneously injected interleukin-13 (IL-13) antagonist tralokinumab-ldrm (Adbry – Leo) and the oral Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors abrocitinib (Cibinqo – Pfizer) and upadacitinib (Rinvoq – Abbvie) have been approved by the FDA for treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis.

Four different desk-top systems are now widely used in physicians'; offices to measure blood chemistries. The Ektachem DT (Kodak) and Reflotron (Boehringer Mannheim), reviewed previously in The Medical Letter (volume 30, page 119, 1988; volume 31, page 90, 1989), resemble the Seralyzer (Miles Diagnostics) in cost; the Vision (Abbott), which is fully automated, is much more expensive.

Rimantadine hydrochloride (Flumadine - Forest), the alpha-methyl derivative of amantadine (Symmetrel, and others), was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for prevention and treatment of influenza A virus infections in adults and for prevention of influenza in children.

Formoterol fumarate inhalation powder Foradil Aerolizer, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist, has been approved by the FDA for maintenance treatment of asthma and prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm. The drug has been available in Europe for many years.

The FDA has approved Haegarda (CSL Bering), a human plasma-derived C1 esterase inhibitor (C1INH), for prophylaxis against hereditary angioedema (HAE) attacks in adolescents and adults. Haegarda is the fourth C1INH to be approved by the FDA and the second to be approved for HAE prophylaxis. Unlike the other C1INHs, Haegarda is self-administered subcutaneously rather than intravenously.

The choice of drugs for treatment of pneumonia depends on the most likely pathogens causing the infection and local antimicrobial resistance patterns. Factors such as severity of illness, presence of co-morbid conditions and whether the infection is community or hospital-acquired also need to be considered.

Brimonidine tartrate 0.2% ophthalmic solution (Alphagan - Allergan), a selective alpha2-adrenergic agonist, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of increased intraocular pressure due to open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension and for its prevention in patients undergoing argon laser trabeculoplasty.

The FDA has approved marketing of the corticosteroid budesonide in an oral inhalatoin powder formulation (Pulmicort Turbuhaler - Astra) for maintenance treatment of asthma in adults and children at least six years old. Budesonide has been available in the USA as an intranasal spray (Rhinocort) for treatment of allergic rhinitis since 1994 and has been used for inhalation treatment of asthma in Canada and Europe for ten years.
