The FDA has approved idarucizumab (Praxbind – Boehringer Ingelheim) for urgent reversal of the anticoagulant effect of the direct thrombin inhibitor dabigatran etexilate (Pradaxa). Idarucizumab is the first specific reversal agent to become available for one of the new oral anticoagulants.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and the dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)/GLP-1 receptor agonist tirzepatide (Mounjaro) are widely prescribed for treatment of type 2 diabetes and weight management (see Table 1), but they delay gastric emptying and commonly cause nausea and vomiting. Gastroparesis and bowel obstruction (ileus) have also been reported with their use.

Cetuximab (Erbitux - ImClone Systems/Bristol-Myers Squibb), an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor, and bevacizumab (Avastin - Genentech), the first vascular endothelial growth factor angiogenesis inhibitor, have recently been approved by the FDA for treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Cetuximab is approved for treatment of patients with EGFR-expressing tumors, either in combination regimens with irinotecan (Camptosar)when the cancer has progressed on irinotecan-based therapy, or as monotherapy for those who cannot tolerate irinotecan. Acupuncture is the practice of inserting fine needles for therapeutic purposes into points on the skin known as acupoints. In traditional Chinese medicine theory, these points arefound along channels that conduct "qi" (pronounced "chee"), or energy. In addition to insertion of needles, acupoints can be stimulated by heat, electrical current or just pressure.

The Norplant System (Wyeth-Ayerst) for subdermal delivery of the synthetic progestin levonorgestrel was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use as a long-term contraceptive.

Altretamine (Hexalen - US Bioscience; Hexastat - Rh ne-Poulenc in Canada), formerly known only by its chemical name, hexamethylmelamine, was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as a single agent for palliative oral treatment of persistent or recurrent ovarian cancer.

Ketorolac (kee' toe role ak) tromethamine 0.5%, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) previously available for parenteral and oral administration (Toradol - Medical Letter, 32:79, 1990), has now been approved for ophthalmic use (Acular - Allergan, Fisons) to relieve itching in seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. NSAIDs decrease prostaglandin concentrations in the eye, which theoretically might contribute to a decrease in itching. Rocuronium bromide (Zemuron - Organon), a new short-onset, intermediate-acting, nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking drug, is now available in the USA for intravenous use. It is being promoted particularly for use in rapid endotracheal intubation.

The US FDA has approved use of palivizumab for prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in high-risk infants and children.

The FDA has approved a sublingual powder formulation of nitroglycerin (GoNitro – Espero) for prevention or acute relief of an attack of angina pectoris. It is the first powder formulation of nitroglycerin to become available in the US. Most patients with angina use sublingual nitroglycerin tablets (Nitrostat, and generics). Translingual spray formulations of nitroglycerin (NitroMist, Nitrolingual Pumpspray, and generics) are also available.
