Felbamate (Felbatol - Wallace Laboratories), a phenyl dicarbamate structurally similar to meprobamate (Equanil, and others), was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use alone or with other drugs in adults with partial seizures with or without secondary generalization. It was also approved for use in addition to other drugs in children with the multiple types of seizures associated with the Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe epileptic encephalopathy.

Fluvoxamine maleate, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that has been available for many years in an immediate-release formulation (Luvox, and others) for treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children and adults, has now been approved by the FDA in an extended-release formulation (Luvox CR - Jazz Pharmaceuticals) for treatment of OCD and social anxiety disorder (SAD) in adults.

Etravirine (Intelence - Tibotec), a new non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), has received fast-track FDA approval for use in combination therapy in treatment-experienced adults who have HIV-1 infection resistant to an NNRTI and other antiretroviral agents.

Patients may be asking their physicians about use of histamine H2-receptor antagonists for treatment and prevention of heartburn. Cimetidine and famotidine have recently been released for over-the-counter sale and are being heavily advertised on television and in the print media.

Tinidazole (Tindamax - Mission Pharmacal), an oral antiprotozoal drug available in the US since 2004 for treatment of trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amebiasis and amebic liver abscess, was recently approved by the FDA for treatment of bacterial vaginosis.

An extended-release formulation of carbamazepine, available since 1997 for treatment of epilepsy, has now been approved under a new name, Equetro, for acute mania and mixed episodes of bipolar disorder. Although the drug was effective in some patients for up to 6 months, it has not been approved for maintenance treatment. Carbamazepine has not been shown to be more effective than lithium or valproate, and it can cause serious adverse effects.

The oral kinase inhibitors dabrafenib (Tafinlar – GSK) and trametinib (Mekinist – Novartis) have been approved by the FDA for use together for a sixth indication: treatment of low-grade glioma (LGG) with a BRAF V600E mutation in patients ≥1 years old who require systemic therapy. This combination is the first systemic therapy to be approved in the US for first-line treatment of LGG with a BRAF V600E mutation in pediatric patients.
