Oxcarbazepine, which is chemically similar to carbamazepine, and levetiracetam, a pyrrolidine acetamide chemically unrelated to other antiepileptic drugs, are the sixth and seventh drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in the last five years for oral use in partial seizures.

A new once-daily, low-dose oral formulation of doxycycline monohydrate (Oracea - CollaGenex) has been approved by the FDA for treatment of inflammatory papules and pustules associated with rosacea in adults.

The FDA has approved the human interleukin (IL)-12 and -23 antagonist ustekinumab (Stelara – Janssen Biotech) for treatment of moderately to severely active Crohn's disease in adults who were intolerant of or whose disease was unresponsive to treatment with immunomodulators or corticosteroids, or a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor. Ustekinumab was approved earlier for treatment of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

The FDA has approved letermovir (Prevymis – Merck), a cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA terminase complex inhibitor, for prophylaxis of CMV infection and disease in CMV-seropositive adult recipients of an allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT). Letermovir is the first CMV DNA terminase complex inhibitor to be approved in the US and the only drug specifically indicated for CMV prophylaxis in HCT patients. It is not approved for treatment of CMV infection.

The FDA has approved a long-acting fixed-dose combination of the stimulant dexmethylphenidate and the prodrug serdexmethylphenidate (Azstarys – Corium) for once-daily treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in patients ≥6 years old. Azstarys is the first product containing serdexmethylphenidate to become available in the US.

Montelukast sodium (Singulair - Merck), a leukotriene receptor antagonist, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for oral prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma in adults and children at least 6 years old. It is the third 'leukotriene modifier' to become available in the USA; zafirlukast (Accolate - Medical Letter, 38:111, 1996) and zileuton (Zyflo - Medical Letter, 39:18, 1997) were marketed previously. Vorinostat (Zolinza - Merck), an oral histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, has received accelerated approval from the FDA for treatment of skin manifestations of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) that is persistent, progressive or recurrent after two systemic therapies. The most common types of CTCL are mycosis fungoides and SΘzary syndrome, the leukemic form of mycosis fungoides.

Tinidazole (Tindamax - Mission Pharmacal), an oral antiprotozoal drug available in the US since 2004 for treatment of trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amebiasis and amebic liver abscess, was recently approved by the FDA for treatment of bacterial vaginosis.

The FDA has approved Genvoya (Gilead), a fixed-dose combination of the integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) elvitegravir, the pharmacokinetic enhancer cobicistat, and the nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide, for treatment of HIV-1 infection in patients ≥12 years old. This is the first approval for tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), a tenofovir prodrug. Stribild, a fixed-dose combination of elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), was approved in 2012.

The FDA has approved Combogesic IV (Hikma), an IV solution containing acetaminophen and ibuprofen, to treat mild to moderate pain (alone) or moderate to severe pain (in combination with an opioid) in adults when IV analgesia is considered clinically necessary. Single-drug IV solutions containing ibuprofen (Caldolor) and acetaminophen have been available in the US for years.
