BCG Live (TheraCys - Connaught) and BCG Vaccine U.S.P. (TiceBCG - Organon), freeze-dried suspensions of an attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis, were recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for intravesical treatment of primary or relapsed carcinoma in situ of the bladder, with or without associated papillary tumors. BCG is not recommended for treatment of papillary tumors occurring alone.

Valrubicin (Valstar), formerly known as AD 32, has been approved by the FDA for intravesical treament of bladder cancer. The approval is limited to patients with carcinoma-in-situ refractory to BCG for whom immediate cystectomy is contraindicated.

Tamoxifen, anti-estrogen used for many years in the treatment of breast cancer, has now been approved by the FDA for reducing the incidence of breast cancer in women at increased risk of developing the disease.

Paclitaxel (Taxol - Bristol-Myers Squibb) is now available in the USA for treatment of metastatic ovarian cancer refractory to other drugs. The new drug is a natural product extracted in small amounts from the inner bark of the Western yew tree found mainly in the Pacific northwest (Taxus brevifolia). The FDA has approved the use of the oral multikinase inhibitor sorafenib (Nexavar – Bayer) for treatment of locally recurrent or metastatic, progressive, differentiated thyroid cancer (papillary or follicular) refractory to radioactive iodine treatment. Sorafenib was approved earlier for treatment of advanced renal cell and unresectable hepatocellular cancer.

Patients are asking physicians about an article on the front page of the June 15th New York Times, in which some prostate cancer experts were quoted as suggesting that men 55 and older might be well advised to take finasteride (Proscar, and others) to prevent prostate cancer.

Three oral poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors have been approved by the FDA for treatment of advanced, recurrent ovarian cancer. Olaparib (Lynparza – AstraZeneca), niraparib (Zejula – Tesaro), and rucaparib (Rubraca – Clovis) are each approved for somewhat different indications and for patients with different biomarkers (see Table 2).

The FDA has required the addition of information about an increased risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma [BCC] and squamous cell carcinoma [SCC]) to the labels of products containing the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide.

Levamisole (Janssen), an old antiparasitic drug widely used for treatment of ascariasis in animals, is now available from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for investigational use with fluorouracil (5-FU; Adrucil; and others) as an adjuvant for treatment of resectable colon cancer that has metastasized to regional lymph nodes (Dukes stage C).

Recent publicity about symptoms of ovarian cancer will prompt many questions from patients about testing for the disease.
