The FDA has approved omidubicel-onlv (Omisirge – Gamida Cell), a nicotinamide-modified, allogeneic hematopoietic progenitor cell therapy derived from cord blood, to reduce the time to neutrophil recovery and the risk of infection in patients ≥12 years old with hematologic malignancies who will undergo umbilical cord blood transplantation following myeloablative conditioning therapy. Changes caused by one drug in the absorption, distribution, metabolism or excretion of another may lead to a pharmacokinetic adverse drug interaction (DN Juurlink et al, JAMA 2003; 289:1652). Additive drug interactions, such as vasodilation caused by both sildenafil (Viagra) and nitrates, can also have adverse effects.

The FDA has approved enzalutamide (en za loo’ ta mide; Xtandi – Astellas/Medivation) for oral treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer in patients previously treated with docetaxel (Taxotere, and generics). It is the second oral drug approved for this indication; abiraterone acetate (Zytiga), which is also approved for first-line use, was the first. Cabazitaxel (Jevtana), which is given parenterally, has a similar indication.

Radium Ra 223 dichloride (Xofigo – Bayer), a radiotherapeutic drug, has been approved by the FDA for intravenous treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer with symptomatic bone metastases and no known visceral metastatic disease.

The FDA has approved (Giapreza) (La Jolla), an IV formulation of synthetic angiotensin II, to increase blood pressure in adults with septic or other vasodilatory shock, such as anaphylactic or neurogenic shock. Angiotensin is a naturally occurring peptide hormone in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). (Giapreza) is the first synthetic angiotensin II product to become available in the US.

The FDA has approved a new spray formulation of the super-high-potency corticosteroid clobetasol propionate 0.05% (Clobex - Galderma) for treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults. Clobetasol propionate is also available as a cream, ointment, gel, solution, foam, lotion and shampoo.

Annual vaccination in the US against influenza A and B viruses is recommended for everyone ≥6 months old without a contraindication. Influenza vaccines available in the US for the 2024-2025 season are listed in Table 2.
