Amprenavir is the fifth protease inhibitor to become available for treatment of HIV infection. It was approved by the FDA for use with other drugs in the treatment of HIV-infected adults and children at least four years old.

Eletriptan hydrobromide (Relpax Pfizer) is now available in the US for oral treatment of migraine headache in adults. It is the seventh serotonin 5-HT1B/1D-receptor agonist (triptan) to be approved by the FDA for this indication. The FDA has approved crofelemer (kroe fel’ e mer; Fulyzaq – Salix), a chloride channel inhibitor derived from the red sap of the South American plant Croton lechleri, for symptomatic relief of noninfectious diarrhea in patients with HIV taking antiretroviral drugs. It is the first drug approved for relief of antiretroviral-induced diarrhea and the first oral botanical drug approved by the FDA.

Darunavir (Prezista - Tibotec), a new protease inhibitor, has received accelerated approval from the FDA for use in combination therapy of human-immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in previously treated adults. It is coadministered with low-dose ritonavir (Norvir), which increases its bioavailability.

Sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn) have become the standard treatment for erectile dysfunction. Head-to-head comparisons of these agents are still lacking, but some differences between them and new recommendations for their dosing (see Table 2) are worth noting.

Caspofungin acetate(Cancidas) is the first of a new class of antifungals, the echinocandins. It has been approved by the FDA for treatment of invasive aspergillosis in patients who fail to respond to or are unable to tolerate other antifungal drugs such as amphotericin B and itraconazole.

The lipid-lowering drug rosuvastatin is now available in a sprinkle capsule formulation (Ezallor Sprinkle – Sun Pharma). Rosuvastatin tablets (Crestor, and generics) have been available since 2003.1,2The new formulation is being marketed specifically for residents of long-term care facilities who have difficulty swallowing. Implanon (Organon), an implantable contraceptive containing the progestin etonogestrel, has been approved by the FDA. Two other implantable contraceptives, Norplant and Jadelle, which both contain levonorgestrel, are FDA-approved but not marketed in the US.
