Succimer (meso 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid; DMSA; CHEMET - McNeil), a heavy metal chelator, was recently marketed in the USA for oral treatment of lead poisoning in children.

Paroxetine (Paxil - SmithKline Beecham), a new selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), is now available in the USA. Two other SSRIs, fluoxetine (Prozac - Medical Letter, 30:45, 1988; 32:83, 1990) and sertraline (Zoloft - Medical Letter, 34:47, 1992), were approved previously.

The enzyme alpha-galactosidase (Beano - AkPharma), derived from a mold and classified as a food, is sold without presecription in pharmacies and food stores. The manufacturer recommends taking the anzyme to decrease intestinal gas producted by eating the high-fiber diets now widely recommended in the USA.

Indium 111 In-satumomab pendetide (CYT-103, OncoScint CR/OV Kit - Cytogen), a new intravenous imaging agent, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for detection of extrahepatic spread of colorectal and ovarian tumors.

Strontium-89 chloride was recently approved for marketing by the US Food and Drug Administration. It is offered for relief of pain caused by metastatic bone lesions

The new Advanced Care Cholesterol Test (Johnson & Johnson) now being advertised to the general public encourages patients to test their own serum cholesterol concentrations. Approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, this product is available in pharmacies without a prescription at a cost of about $20 for a single determination.

Bicalutamide (Casodex - Zeneca), an oral nonsteroidal antiandrogen similar to flutamide (Eulexin - Medical Letter, 31:72, 1989), is now available in the USA for treat-ment of advanced prostate cancer. The drug is recommended by the manufacturer for use concurrently with an analog of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) such as leuprolide (Lupron; Lupron Depot) or goserelin (Zoladex -Medical Letter, 32:102, 1990).

Gastrointestinal gas may cause symptoms when excessive amounts become trapped in the stomach and intestinal tract. Simethicone (Gas-X, Maalox Anti-Gas, Mylanta Gas Relief, Mylicon, Phazyme), sold over-the-counter in capsules, tablets and infant drop formulations, is being heavily advertised to the public for symptomatic treatment of flatulence and gastric bloating. According to a recent press release, 'Phazyme works fast so people can continue living active lives and eating the foods they love without fear of embarrassment.' Results of a recent study suggested that zinc gluconate may be effective in treating the common cold (SB Mossad et al, Ann Intern Med, 125:81, July 15, 1996). Zinc gluconate lozenges, sometimes combined with vitamin C or other ingredients, are available in pharmacies and health food stores throughout the USA.

The Medical Letter has received many inquiries about use of glucosamine, a basic constituent of articular cartilage glycosaminoglycans, for treatment of arthritis. A recently published book (The Arthritis Cure), several television news shows, and articles in The New York Times have suggested it may be effective for treatment of osteoarthritis. Glucosamine is sold as a 'dietary supplement' in the USA.
