Meloxicam, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with some cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) selectivity in vitro, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of osteoarthritis.

The FDA has approved use of tadalafil (Adcirca - Lilly/United Therapeutics) for treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

The FDA has approved the sGC stimulator riociguat (rye" oh sig' ue at; Adempas – Bayer) for oral treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) following surgery or when surgery is not an option. It is the first drug to be approved for treatment of CTEPH.

The Medical Letter reported last year that sildenafil (Viagra - Pfizer) appeared to be effective for idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), but confirmation from a controlled trial was needed. Now the results of such a study are about to be published, and the drug has been approved by the FDA for this indication under the trade name Revatio.

As the weather becomes warmer, physicians may see more photosensitivity reactions due to systemic or topical drugs, perfumes, cosmetics or sunscreens. Even brief exposure to sunlight in warm or cold weather can cause intense cutaneous reactions in patients with drug-induced photosensitivity, and some patients may continue to be sensitive to sunlight long after stopping use of the offending agent.

The FDA has approved Tekamlo (Novartis), an oral fixed-dose combination of the direct renin inhibitor aliskiren (Tekturna) and the calcium channel blocker amlodipine (Norvasc, and others), for treatment of hypertension in patients not adequately controlled on monotherapy or already taking both drugs, and as initial therapy in those likely to need multiple drugs to control their blood pressure (BP). Both aliskiren and amlodipine are available in combinations with other antihypertensive agents.

The FDA has approved Viekira Pak (Abbvie), a fixed-dose combination of two new direct-acting antiviral agents (ombitasvir, paritaprevir) with the pharmacologic enhancer ritonavir in one tablet, co-packaged with a third new direct-acting antiviral agent (dasabuvir) in a second tablet, for oral treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infection. Genotype 1 is responsible for 70-80% of HCV infections in the US.

The FDA has approved Entresto (Novartis), an oral fixed-dose combination of the neprilysin inhibitor sacubitril and the angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) valsartan, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and heart failure hospitalization in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Sacubitril is the first neprilysin inhibitor to become available in the US.

Inhaled antibiotics, which can achieve high concentrations in the lung with minimal systemic side effects, are probably the most effective therapy available for chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in patients with cystic fibrosis.
