Rufinamide (Banzel - Eisai), a triazole derivative structurally unrelated to other marketed antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), has been approved by the FDA for treatment of seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) in patients ≥4 years old.

The FDA has approved suvorexant (Belsomra – Merck), the first orexin receptor antagonist to become available in the US, for treatment of sleep-onset and/or sleep-maintenance insomnia.

The FDA has approved Viekira Pak (Abbvie), a fixed-dose combination of two new direct-acting antiviral agents (ombitasvir, paritaprevir) with the pharmacologic enhancer ritonavir in one tablet, co-packaged with a third new direct-acting antiviral agent (dasabuvir) in a second tablet, for oral treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infection. Genotype 1 is responsible for 70-80% of HCV infections in the US.

Eszopiclone (Lunesta - Sepracor), a benzodiazepine-like drug, has been approved by the FDA for oral treatment of insomnia. It is the S-isomer of zopiclone (Imovane, and others in Canada), which has been available in other countries for almost 20 years. Unlike similar drugs such as zolpidem (Ambien) or zaleplon (Sonata), Lunesta is not being restricted in its labeling to short-term use. Like other hypnotics, eszopiclone is a schedule IV drug.

Lopinavir/ritonavir is the first fixed-dose combination of protease inhibitors approved by the FDA for the treatment of HIV infection. It is being marketed for use with other drugs in adults and children more than six months old. Lopinavir is a new drug available only in this combination. Ritonavir is often used with other protease inhibitors to raise their plasma concentrations.

Armodafinil (Nuvigil – Cephalon), the R-enantiomer of the non-amphetamine stimulant modafinil (Provigil – Cephalon; Alertec – Shire in Canada), is being promoted directly to the public for treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness associated with shift work.

Atripla (Gilead/Bristol-Myers Squibb) is the first once daily, single-tablet combination of 3 antiretroviral drugs for treatment of HIV infection. Each tablet contains 600 mg of the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) efavirenz (Sustiva), 200 mg of the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) emtricitabine (Emtriva), and 300 mg of the nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) tenofovir DF (Viread). Ramelteon (Rozerem - Takeda), a melatonin receptor agonist, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty falling asleep. Unlike all other prescription hypnotics, which are classified as schedule IV drugs, ramelteon is not a controlled substance.
