The FDA has approved the Obalon Balloon System (Obalon), a swallowable intragastric gas-filled balloon device, to facilitate weight loss in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30-40 kg/m² who have not been able to lose weight through diet and exercise. Two other gastric balloon devices, ReShape and Orbera, were approved earlier.

The oral second-generation antipsychotic drug lumateperone (Caplyta – Intra-Cellular Therapies), which was approved by the FDA in 2020 for treatment of schizophrenia, is now approved for use as monotherapy or as an adjunct to lithium or valproate for treatment of depressive episodes associated with bipolar I or II disorder in adults.

Phosphonoformic acid or foscarnet (Foscavir - Astra), a synthetic antiviral drug, has now been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for intravenous (IV) treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with AIDS. CMV retinitis occurs in up to 30% of patients with AIDS and often causes blindness (MD de Smet and RB Nussenbatt, JAMA, 266:3019, Dec 4, 1991).

Perindopril, the tenth angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor to be marketed in the USA, and telmisartan and eprosartan, the fifth and sixth angiotensin receptor blockers, have recently become available for treatment of hypertension.

Ertapenem (er ta pen' em; Invanz - Merck), a carbapenem antibacterial with a narrower spectrum of activity than imipenem (Primaxin) or meropenem (Merrem), has been approved by the FDA for once-daily IV treatment of complicated intra-abdominal, urinary tract and skin and skin structure infections, acute pelvic infections, and community-acquired pneumonia.

Celiac disease is a chronic autoimmune disorder caused by a genetic intolerance to gluten that occurs in about 1% of the population. The main form of treatment is a lifelong gluten-free diet.

The FDA has approved cangrelor (Kengreal – The Medicines Company), an IV P2Y12 platelet inhibitor, as an adjunct to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients who have not been pretreated with a P2Y12 inhibitor and are not being given a glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor.

The FDA has approved the immune checkpoint inhibitor atezolizumab (Tecentriq – Genentech) for treatment of locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma and metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that have progressed during or following platinum-based chemotherapy. Atezolizumab is the first programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) blocking antibody to become available in the US. Annovera (TherapeuticsMD), a contraceptive vaginal ring that releases segesterone acetate, a synthetic progestin, and ethinyl estradiol, was approved by the FDA in 2018 and is now available. It is the first product to contain segesterone and the second vaginal ring to become available in the US; NuvaRing, which delivers etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol, was the first. Unlike NuvaRing, which requires use of a new ring each month, the Annovera ring can be used for an entire year, but it must be removed for one week each month.

The FDA has issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Regeneron's investigational monoclonal antibodies casirivimab and imdevimab (REGEN-COV) to be administered together by IV infusion or SC injection for treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults and pediatric patients (≥12 years old and weigh ≥40 kg) who are at high risk of progressing to severe COVID-19 and/or hospitalization.
