Risankizumab is the first IL-23 antagonist to be approved for treatment of both CD and UC. It is also approved for treatment of plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

The FDA has approved the antiviral drug remdesivir (Veklury – Gilead) for IV treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients who are ≥12 years old and weigh ≥40 kg. Hospitalized children who are <12 years old or weigh <40 kg can receive remdesivir through an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Remdesivir is the first drug to be approved in the US for treatment of COVID-19.

The FDA has reported that 5106 elderly patients with dementia treated with atypical (second generation) antipsychotics in 17 randomized controlled trials had a higher mortality rate (4.5% vs. 2.6%) than those receiving placebo. Most of the deaths were due to cardiovascular and infectious causes (such as pneumonia). The drugs used in the trials were aripiprazole (Abilify), olanzapine (Zyprexa), quetiapine (Seroquel), and risperidone (Risperdal). The FDA has approved ticagrelor (Brilinta – AstraZeneca), an oral antiplatelet drug, for use with low-dose aspirin to reduce the rate of thrombotic cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). It will compete with clopidogrel (Plavix) and prasugrel (Effient) for such use. Clopidogrel is expected to become available generically in the US within the next few months.

Famciclovir (Famvir - SmithKline Beecham) is now available in the USA for oral treatment of acute uncomplicated herpes zoster (shingles). The manufacturer claims that use of the drug reduces the duration of postherpetic neuralgia. Famciclovir is similar to acyclovir (Zovirax - Burroughs Wellcome), which has been the drug of choice for treatment of varicella-zoster and herpes simplex virus infections (Medical Letter, 36:27, 1994).
