An article published in the New York Times on May 1, 2015 listed the 10 drugs on which Medicare Part D spent the most in 2013. The most costly ($2.53 billion) was the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium), which has recently become available generically.

The FDA has approved the antiviral drug remdesivir (Veklury – Gilead) for IV treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients who are ≥12 years old and weigh ≥40 kg. Hospitalized children who are <12 years old or weigh <40 kg can receive remdesivir through an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Remdesivir is the first drug to be approved in the US for treatment of COVID-19.

Zaleplon, a pyrazolopyrimidine hypnotic, was recently approved by the FDA for short-term treatment of insomia. Zaleplon, like zolpidem, is a non-benzodiazepine that binds to benzodiazepine receptors.

The FDA has approved a 12.45% gel formulation of the anticholinergic drug sofpironium (Sofdra – Botanix) for treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) in patients ≥9 years old.

Breztri Aerosphere (AstraZeneca), a three-drug inhaler containing the inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) budesonide, the long-acting antimuscarinic agent (LAMA) glycopyrrolate, and the long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) formoterol fumarate, has been approved by the FDA for maintenance treatment of asthma in patients ≥12 years old. Some patients with primary immune deficiency are injected with intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) every 3-4 weeks. Now a subcutaneous immune globulin (SCIG) has also been approved in the US for this indication (Vivaglobin - CSL Behring). SCIG has been used in Europe for about 10 years.

Several injectable products are available for soft tissue augmentation of wrinkles and folds. These fillers are often used in conjunction with botulinum toxin type A (Botox) injections.
