The FDA has approved inotuzumab ozogamicin (Besponsa – Pfizer), a humanized anti-CD22 monoclonal antibody conjugated to the cytotoxic antibiotic calicheamicin, for treatment of relapsed or refractory B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in adults. It is the first CD22-directed antibody-drug conjugate to be approved in the US.

The FDA has approved letermovir (Prevymis – Merck), a cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA terminase complex inhibitor, for prophylaxis of CMV infection and disease in CMV-seropositive adult recipients of an allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT). Letermovir is the first CMV DNA terminase complex inhibitor to be approved in the US and the only drug specifically indicated for CMV prophylaxis in HCT patients. It is not approved for treatment of CMV infection.

The FDA has approved the oral multikinase inhibitor midostaurin (Rydapt – Novartis) for first-line treatment, in addition to standard chemotherapy, of adults with FLT3 (fms-like tyrosine kinase 3) mutation-positive acute myeloid leukemia (AML). About 30% of patients with AML have FLT3 mutations. Photopheresis is a new technique recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. It combines oral administration of a photoactivatable cytotoxic drug with leukapheresis and extracorporeal exposure of leukocytes to long-wave ultraviolet light (UVA). This procedure requires use of a 'UVAR Instrument' manufactured by Therakos, a subdivision of Johnson and Johnson.

An extended-release formulation of carbamazepine, available since 1997 for treatment of epilepsy, has now been approved under a new name, Equetro, for acute mania and mixed episodes of bipolar disorder. Although the drug was effective in some patients for up to 6 months, it has not been approved for maintenance treatment. Carbamazepine has not been shown to be more effective than lithium or valproate, and it can cause serious adverse effects.

The US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has recommended that adults with immunocompromising conditions receive the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13; Prevnar 13), even if they have already received the older 23-valent unconjugated vaccine (PPSV23; Pneumovax 23). Glatiramer acetate (Copaxone - Teva Marion Partners), formerly known as copolymer-l, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). A nasal spray formulation of cyanocobalamin (Nascobal – Questcor) has been approved by the FDA for maintenance treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency. Nascobal is already available as an intranasal gel.
