Zafirlukast (za fir loo kast; Accolate - Zeneca), the first leukotriene receptor anta-gonist approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, is now being heavily promoted for oral maintenance treatment of chronic asthma in patients more than 12 years old. It is not recommended for treatment of acute asthma.

The FDA has approved anthrax vaccine adsorbed (AVA; BioThrax – Emergent BioSolutions) for prevention of anthrax disease in adults following exposure to Bacillus anthracis and intravenous anthrax immune globulin (Anthrasil – Emergent BioSolutions) for treatment of inhalation anthrax in adults and children. AVA has been available since 1970 for prevention of anthrax disease in persons at high risk of exposure.

Picaridin (KBR 3023), which has been used as an insect repellent for years in Europe and Australia (Autan Repel, and others), is now available in the US in 7% solution as Cutter Advanced (Spectrum Brands). Continued use of a long-acting beta-2 agonist for treatment of asthma may cause down-regulation of the beta-2 receptor with loss of the bronchoprotective effect from rescue therapy with a short-acting beta-2 agonist. The FDA has approved a 1.5% topical foam formulation of minocycline (Zilxi – Foamix) for treatment of inflammatory lesions of rosacea in adults. It is the only topical minocycline product approved for this indication. The same manufacturer markets minocycline foam 4% (Amzeeq) for treatment of acne in patients ≥9 years old.

Levalbuterol, the R-isomer of racemic albuterol, has been approved by the FDA for prevention and treatment of bronchospasm in patients at least 12 years old.

The FDA has approved mannitol powder for oral inhalation (Bronchitol – Chiesi) as add-on maintenance treatment to improve pulmonary function in adults with cystic fibrosis (CF). This product has been available in Europe for the same indication since 2012. Another formulation of mannitol inhalation powder (Aridol) is approved in the US for assessment of bronchial hyperresponsiveness.
