FluMist (MedImmune), the first live-attenuated and first intranasally administered influenza vaccine, has been approved by the FDA to prevent influenza in healthy people 5-49 years old. Given as a nasal spray, it stimulates immunity by viral replication in the upper respiratory tract. This vaccine apparently will be advertised directly to the public as a "needle-free" alternative to intramuscular influenza vaccine.

A recent supplement to the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, titled "The Expert Consensus Guideline Series: Optimizing Pharmacologic Treatment of Psychotic Disorders," concluded that most experts endorsed use of second-generation (atypical) antipsychotics rather than first-generation drugs, with risperidone (Risperdal - Janssen) the top choice for first episodes, multiple episodes or switches from another drug (JM Kane et al, J Clin Psychiatry 2003; 64 suppl 12:5). Abarelix (Plenaxis - Praecis Pharmaceuticals), an injectable gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of advanced symptomatic prostate cancer in patients who should not take luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists and who refuse treatment with surgical castration.

Telithromycin (Ketek - Aventis) has been approved by the FDA for oral treatment of mild to moderate community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and acute bacterial sinusitis in patients age 18 and older. The drug is the first in a new class of antibiotics, the ketolides, derived from the macrolide erythromycin. Telithromycin has been marketed in Europe since 2001.

The same pharmaceutical company (Iroko) that recently marketed low-dose diclofenac (Zorvolex) for treatment of mild to moderate acute pain1 has now received approval from the FDA to market a low-dose oral formulation of indomethacin (Tivorbex) for the same indication.
