The FDA has approved Toujeo (Sanofi), a more concentrated form of insulin glargine containing 300 IU/mL compared to the 100 IU/mL in Lantus (Sanofi). Lantus is nearing the end of its patent protection in the US, and biosimilars are expected to become available.

The FDA has approved Odefsey (Gilead), a once-daily, fixed-dose combination of the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) rilpivirine and the nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide, for initial treatment of HIV-1 infection in patients with HIV-1 RNA (viral load) ≤100,000 copies/mL or to replace a stable antiretroviral regimen in patients who have been virologically suppressed (viral load <50 copies/mL) for at least six months with no history of treatment failure.

The FDA has approved Anjeso (Baudax Bio), an IV formulation of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) meloxicam, for once-daily treatment of moderate to severe pain in adults. Oral meloxicam (Mobic, and others), which is only indicated for treatment of chronic pain associated with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, has been available for 20 years. IV formulations of ketorolac, ibuprofen (Caldolor), and acetaminophen (Ofirmev) are also available for treatment of pain.

The FDA has approved Airsupra (AstraZeneca), a metered-dose inhaler containing the short-acting beta₂-agonist (SABA) albuterol and the inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) budesonide, for use as needed for treatment or prevention of bronchoconstriction and to reduce the risk of exacerbations in patients ≥18 years old with asthma. Airsupra is the first combination of a SABA and an ICS to become available in the US. It is not approved for use as maintenance therapy.

In addition to surgery and radiation therapy, a variety of drugs are used both singly and in combination to treat breast cancer. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is recommended for initial treatment of chronic insomnia. CBT-I includes stimulus control, sleep education and hygiene, sleep restriction, relaxation training, and cognitive therapy. When CBT-I alone is not effective, pharmacologic treatment should be added.

The FDA has approved ranibizumab (Lucentis - Genentech) as an intravitreal injection for treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Ranibizumab is a derivative of bevacizumab (Avastin), which is FDA-approved for intravenous treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer and nonsmall cell lung cancer, but has also been used off label for intravitreal treatment of neovascular AMD.

Sitagliptin phosphate (Januvia - Merck) is the first dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor to be marketed for treatment of type 2 diabetes. It has been approved by the FDA for oral use as monotherapy or in combination with metformin (Glucophage, and others), pioglitazone (Actos) or rosiglitazone (Avandia).
