Givinostat (Duvyzat – Italfarmaco), an oral histone deacetylase inhibitor, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of patients ≥6 years old with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), regardless of the DMD-causing mutation. It is the first nonsteroidal drug to be approved for this indication. The oral corticosteroids deflazacort (Emflaza) and vamorolone (Agamree) are also approved for treatment of patients with all genetic variants of DMD.

Palopegteriparatide (Yorvipath – Ascendis), a parathyroid hormone (PTH) 1-34 analog, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of hypoparathyroidism in adults. The parathyroid hormone analog teriparatide (Forteo, and others), which is approved for treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, has been used off-label for treatment of hypoparathyroidism.

Fitusiran (Qfitlia – Sanofi), a subcutaneously injected, antithrombin-directed, small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA), has been approved by the FDA for routine prophylaxis to prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in patients ≥12 years old who have hemophilia A with or without factor VIII inhibitors or hemophilia B with or without factor IX inhibitors. It is the first antithrombin-lowering therapy to become available in the US for treatment of hemophilia.

The FDA has approved Vizz (Lenz Therapeutics), a 1.44% ophthalmic solution of the cholinergic agonist aceclidine, for treatment of presbyopia in adults. Aceclidine has been available in the EU for years for treatment of open-angle glaucoma.

The FDA has approved garadacimab-gxii (Andembry – CSL Behring), a subcutaneously injected inhibitor of activated clotting factor XII, for prevention of hereditary angioedema (HAE) attacks in patients ≥12 years old. Garadacimab is the first activated factor XII inhibitor to become available in the US for HAE prophylaxis

The oral sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) receptor modulator ozanimod (Zeposia – Bristol Myers Squibb) has been approved by the FDA for treatment of adults with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. It is the first S1P receptor modulator to be approved for treatment of ulcerative colitis. Ozanimod was approved in March 2020 for use in adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommend using insect repellents to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, ticks, and other arthropods that transmit disease-causing pathogens. Repellents applied to exposed skin should be used in conjunction with other preventive measures such as wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks and avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito-biting times. Some insect repellents are listed in Table 1.

An oral nonopioid analgesic is often sufficient for acute treatment of mild to moderate migraine pain without severe nausea or vomiting. A triptan is the drug of choice for treatment of moderate to severe migraine in most patients without vascular disease. Treatment of pain when it is still mild to moderate in intensity improves headache response and reduces the risk of recurrence.

Nabilone (Cesamet - Lilly), a synthetic cannabinoid chemically related to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main active ingredient in marijuana, was recently marketed in the USA for oral treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy. Oral THC itself, known generically as dronabinol (Marinol), is also commercially available as an antiemetic for cancer patients (Medical Letter, 27:97, 1985). Nabumetone (Relafen - SmithKline Beecham), a new nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The drug has been available in the United Kingdom since 1987. The manufacturer claims that nabumetone is as effective as other NSAIDs and causes a relatively low incidence of peptic ulcers.
