Several currently available antiemetic drugs can prevent vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy. Anticancer drugs that cause vomiting are listed in the table below.

Nabilone (Cesamet - Lilly), a synthetic cannabinoid chemically related to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main active ingredient in marijuana, was recently marketed in the USA for oral treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy. Oral THC itself, known generically as dronabinol (Marinol), is also commercially available as an antiemetic for cancer patients (Medical Letter, 27:97, 1985). Three benzodiazepines and 16 other compounds are marketed in the USA for treatment of insomnia. Many authorities believe that insomnia is overdiagnosed and overtreated (MK Erman, ed, Sleep Disorders, Psychiatr Clin North Am, Volume 10, Dec 1987).

Ondansetron (on dan' se tron; Zofran - Glaxo), a serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) antagonist, was recently marketed in the USA for intravenous use to prevent nausea and vomiting due to cancer chemotherapy. An oral formulation is available in many other countries.

Opioids, benzodiazepines, propofol, antipsychotics and dexmedetomidine (Precedex) are frequently used in the intensive care unit (ICU) to manage pain, anxiety, agitation and delirium, and to facilitate procedures such as mechanical ventilation. The use of dexmedetomidine, a centrally-acting selective α₂-receptor agonist approved by the FDA in 1999, has been increasing in recent years. Some new studies comparing it to other drugs for ICU sedation have been published.

Granisetron, a serotonin (5-HT) antagonist similar to ondansetron, was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for prevention of nausea and vomiting due to cancer chemotherapy. Although available in an oral formulation in other countries, granisetron is available here only for intravenous (IV) use.

Zaleplon, a pyrazolopyrimidine hypnotic, was recently approved by the FDA for short-term treatment of insomia. Zaleplon, like zolpidem, is a non-benzodiazepine that binds to benzodiazepine receptors.

The FDA now requires boxed warnings in the package inserts of benzodiazepines describing the potential for these drugs to be abused and misused and to cause addiction and physical dependence. Benzodiazepine labels have contained a boxed warning about a risk of serious drug interactions with opioids since 2016.

The physiologic changes that occur with aging can affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of many prescription and over-the-counter drugs, increasing the likelihood of adverse effects.

The FDA has approved a sublingual film formulation of the alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist dexmedetomidine (Igalmi — BioXcel Therapeutics) for acute treatment of agitation associated with schizophrenia or bipolar I or II disorder in adults. It is the first alpha-2 agonist and the only sublingual film to be approved for this indication. Dexmedetomidine has been available for many years in an injectable formulation (Precedex) for sedation in the intensive care unit and to facilitate procedures such as mechanical ventilation.
