Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (Cipro - Miles), a synthetic antibacterial agent, was recently marketed in the USA for oral treatment of a wide variety of infections. Ciprofloxacin is the second fluoroquinolone to become available in this country; norfloxacin (Noroxin - Medical Letter, 29:25, 1987) is marketed only for treatment of urinary tract infections. Fluoroquinolones are more potent and have a much broader spectrum of activity than older quinolones such as nalidixic acid (NegGram).

Acrivastine/Pseudoephedrine (Semprex-D) for Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (Burroughs-Wellcome), a combination of acrivastine with pseudoephedrine hydrochloride, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Acrivastine is a new H 1 -receptor antagonist with a chemical structure similar to that of triprolidine (Actidil, and others) (RN Brogden and D McTavish, Drugs, 41:927, 1991). Pseudoephedrine is an α -adrenergic agonist. The combination is available only by prescription.

Mirabegron (mir a beg’ ron; Myrbetriq [meer BEH trick] – Astellas), a beta-3 adrenergic agonist, has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of overactive bladder. It is the first beta-3 adrenergic agonist to be approved for any indication in the US. Mirabegron has been marketed in Japan since 2011. OnabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) was also recently approved by the FDA for treatment of overactive bladder and will be reviewed in a future issue.

The FDA has approved Duaklir Pressair (Circassia), a fixed-dose combination of the long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) aclidinium bromide and the longacting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) formoterol fumarate, for maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Aclidinium/formoterol is the fifth LAMA/LABA combination to be approved in the US for this indication.
