Recently published guidelines recommend screening patients with hypertension for primary aldosteronism. The Endocrine Society recommends screening all patients and the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) recommend screening those at increased risk (see Table 1).

Implanon (Organon), an implantable contraceptive containing the progestin etonogestrel, has been approved by the FDA. Two other implantable contraceptives, Norplant and Jadelle, which both contain levonorgestrel, are FDA-approved but not marketed in the US.

The FDA has approved over-the-counter (OTC) sale of the weight-loss drug orlistat (Xenical – Roche)1 as alli (GlaxoSmithKline), to be used in combination with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet. Orlistat binds to gastric and pancreatic lipases, preventing absorption of about 30% of dietary fat with the 120-mg prescription dose, and 25% with the 60-mg OTC dose. A 16-week controlled trial of the OTC dose (60 mg 3 times daily with meals) in overweight, not obese, patients (average BMI 26.8) on a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet found that patients taking the drug lost 1.15 kg more than those taking...

Oxymorphone hydrochloride, a semi-synthetic opioid agonist, has been available for many years in the US as Numorphan (Endo) for parenteral use and as a rectal suppository. Now it has been approved by the FDA for oral administration as an immediate-release (IR) tablet (Opana) for treatment of moderate to severe acute pain, and as an extended-release tablet (Opana ER) for treatment of moderate to severe pain in patients requiring continuous opioid treatment for an extended period of time.

Recently updated guidelines from the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) address the use of corticosteroids as an adjunct to antimicrobials for treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).

The FDA has approved ibrexafungerp (Brexafemme – Scynexis), a first-in-class triterpenoid antifungal ("fungerp"), for oral treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis in postmenarchal females.

Tetrabenazine (Xenazine - Ovation Pharmaceuticals), an old drug first synthesized 50 years ago for treatment of schizophrenia, was recently approved by the FDA for the treatment of chorea associated with Huntington's disease. It has been available in other countries for decades.

The FDA has approved release of omalizumab (oh mah lye zoo mab; Xolair - Genentech, Novartis), a humanized monoclonal antibody given subcutaneously that binds to immunoglobulin E (IgE). The drug is labeled for patients at least 12 years old with moderate to severe persistent asthma who have shown reactivity to an allergen and whose symptoms are inadequately controlled by an inhaled corticosteroid. The manufacturer claims the drug can help stop allergic reactions before they begin.

Management of intermittent claudication, the most common symptom of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), involves both risk factor modification and symptomatic treatment (WR Hiatt, N Engl J Med 2001; 344:1608; RM Schainfeld, J Am Board Fam Pract 2001; 14:443).

Panitumumab (Vectibix - Amgen), a fully human IgG₂ monoclonal antibody that inhibits the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), has been approved by the FDA for treatment of patients with EGFR-expressing metastatic colorectal cancer that has progressed despite standard chemotherapy. It is the second monoclonal antibody EGFR inhibitor to be approved for metastatic colorectal cancer; cetuximab (Erbitux), a human-murine chimeric IgG₁ monoclonal antibody, was approved in 2004.
