The FDA has approved Tekamlo (Novartis), an oral
fixed-dose combination of the direct renin inhibitor
aliskiren (Tekturna) and the calcium channel blocker
amlodipine (Norvasc, and others), for treatment of
hypertension in patients not adequately controlled on
monotherapy or already taking both drugs, and as initial
therapy in those likely to need multiple drugs to control
their blood pressure (BP). Both aliskiren and amlodipine
are available in combinations with other antihypertensive
agents.

HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) atorvastatin as
Liptruzet (Merck) for treatment of hyperlipidemia.

Tiotropium bromide, an inhaled long-acting anticholinergic
available since 2004 as a dry powder inhaler
(Spiriva Handihaler) for once-daily treatment of chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), has now also
been approved in an inhalation spray formulation
(Spiriva Respimat – Boehringer Ingelheim). According
to the manufacturer, the Respimat device improves
delivery of tiotropium to the lungs because, unlike with
the Handihaler, it is not dependent on the strength of
the patient’s breath intake.

Sandoz), a biosimilar of the recombinant human
granulocyte colony-stimulating factor filgrastim
(G-CSF; Neupogen), which has been available in the

The FDA has approved Qmiiz ODT (TerSera), an orally
disintegrating tablet formulation of the prescription
NSAID meloxicam. Qmiiz ODT, like conventional oral
meloxicam tablets (Mobic, and generics), is indicated
for relief of the symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA) and
rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adults and of juvenile RA
in children who weigh ≥60 kg. Vivlodex, a low-dose
capsule formulation of meloxicam, is FDA-approved
only for management of OA pain.
