Several large European observational studies published on-line this summer have raised questions about whether use of insulin glargine increases the risk of cancer.

The FDA has approved brodalumab (Siliq – Valeant), an injectable human interleukin (IL)-17A receptor antagonist, for treatment of adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who have failed to respond to other systemic therapies. Brodalumab is the third IL-17A antagonist to be approved in the US for this indication; secukinumab (Cosentyx) and ixekizumab (Taltz) were approved earlier.

The FDA has approved fostamatinib disodium hexahydrate (Tavalisse – Rigel), the first spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) inhibitor, for oral treatment of thrombocytopenia in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) who have had an insufficient response to a previous treatment.

Annovera (TherapeuticsMD), a contraceptive vaginal ring that releases segesterone acetate, a synthetic progestin, and ethinyl estradiol, was approved by the FDA in 2018 and is now available. It is the first product to contain segesterone and the second vaginal ring to become available in the US; NuvaRing, which delivers etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol, was the first. Unlike NuvaRing, which requires use of a new ring each month, the Annovera ring can be used for an entire year, but it must be removed for one week each month.

The FDA has approved the interleukin (IL)-23 antagonist mirikizumab-mrkz (Omvoh – Lilly) for treatment of moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC) in adults. Mirikizumab is the first selective IL-23 antagonist to be approved for this indication. Ustekinumab (Stelara), an IL-12/23 antagonist, was approved for treatment of UC in 2019. Among patients with chronic heart failure, those with a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤40% are considered to have heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Patients with a LVEF ≥50% are considered to have heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Those with a LVEF of 41-49% are an intermediate group more similar to patients with HFpEF.
