The FDA has approved Xifyrm (Azurity) and Qamzova (Nanjing Delova), two new intravenous (IV) formulations of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) meloxicam, for use alone or in combination with non-NSAID analgesics for treatment of moderate to severe pain in adults. Anjeso, the first IV formulation of meloxicam, was discontinued in 2022 for commercial reasons.

Lisdexamfetamine dimesylate (Vyvanse - Shire), a prodrug in which d-amphetamine is covalently bonded to L-lysine, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children 6-12 years old. It was designed to have less potential than amphetamine itself for abuse, diversion or overdose toxicity. Like methylphenidate and amphetamines, lisdexamfetamine is a Schedule II controlled substance.

The FDA has approved a transmucosal tablet formulation of fentanyl citrate (Fentora - Cephalon) for management of breakthrough pain in opioid-tolerant patients with cancer. An oral transmucosal fentanyl lozenge on a stick (Actiq, and others) is also available for this indication, and is widely used off-label for chronic, non-cancer pain as well.

The FDA has approved delafloxacin (Baxdela – Melinta), an anionic fluoroquinolone antibiotic, for oral and parenteral treatment of adults with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSIs), including those caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It is the first fluoroquinolone to be approved for treatment of MRSA.

Celecoxib, a selective COX-2 inhibitor, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Aggrenox, a fixed-dose oral combination of aspirin and extended-release dipyridamole, is now being advertised for secondary prevention of a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or ischemic stroke.

Even though its effectiveness has not been established, many patients take St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum), an over-the-counter herbal extract, to treat symptoms of depression, often without the knowledge of their physicians. Recent reports indicate that St. John's wort interacts adversely with a number of drugs.

Caspofungin acetate(Cancidas) is the first of a new class of antifungals, the echinocandins. It has been approved by the FDA for treatment of invasive aspergillosis in patients who fail to respond to or are unable to tolerate other antifungal drugs such as amphotericin B and itraconazole.

Most patients with lung cancer present with advanced disease, and fewer than 20% live for five years after diagnosis. Earlier detection of lung cancer, when it is potentially resectable, might improve survival. Recent studies have led some radiology centers to promote spiral computed tomography (CT), which involves much less exposure to radiation than standard CT, as a screening tool for lung cancer.
