Gastroenterology 2017; 153:35.
5. B Farrell et al. Deprescribing proton pump inhibitors ...
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are used for
treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
and for prevention of upper gastrointestinal adverse
effects caused by NSAIDs and aspirin, are one of
the most commonly prescribed classes of drugs in
the US. All PPIs are similarly effective and generally
well tolerated, but their long-term use has been
associated with a number of safety concerns.
Recommendations addressing these concerns have
recently been published.

Unlike new drugs, new techniques for surgery do not need the approval of any government agency. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, made possible by the development of miniaturized television cameras, is one such technique that has recently attracted widespread interest (LW Way, N Engl J Med, 323:1273, Nov 1, 1990; R Winslow, Wall St J, 216:1, Dec 10, 1990).

Virtual Colonoscopy
The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics • Feb 14, 2005 (Issue 1202)
colonography with
cathartic preparation for the detection of colorectal polyps.
Gastroenterology 2004; 127 ...
Currently available techniques for colorectal cancer screening include fecal occult-blood testing, flexible sigmoidoscopy, double contrast barium enema (DCBE) and traditional optical colonoscopy. Optical colonoscopy requires bowel cleansing and sedation, and involves some risk, but is generally accepted as the best available method for detection of lesions and offers the advantage that polyps can be removed when they are identified. A less invasive screening tool, computed tomography (CT) colonography, also known as virtual colonoscopy (VC), offers an additional option.
