Prademagene zamikeracel (Zevaskyn – Abeona Therapeutics), an autologous cell sheet-based gene therapy, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of wounds in patients with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. It is the first autologous cell sheet-based gene therapy to be approved in the US for this indication. Beremagene geperpavek gel (Vyjuvek), a herpes simplex virus type 1 vector-based gene therapy, is approved for once-weekly use in patients ≥6 months old with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.

Atazanavir (Reyataz - Bristol-Myers Squibb), a new protease inhibitor (PI), and emtricitabine (Emtriva - Gilead), a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) chemically similar to lamivudine, have been approved by the FDA for treatment of HIV-1 infection. Both are taken once daily, unlike most anti-HIV drugs.

Valoctocogene roxaparvovec-rvox (Roctavian – Biomarin), an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector-based gene therapy, has been approved by the FDA for one-time treatment of severe hemophilia A in adults without pre-existing antibodies to AAV serotype 5. It is the first gene therapy to be approved in the US for treatment of hemophilia A.

Rifabutin (formerly ansamycin; Mycobutin - Adria), a rifamycin antibiotic similar to rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane) was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for prevention of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in patients with advanced HIV infection.

An advertising war between manufacturers of over-the-counter (OTC) analgesics has led some patients to ask their physicians about the safety of taking these products if they also drink alcohol.

The FDA has approved Descovy (Gilead), a fixed-dose combination of the nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) emtricitabine (FTC) and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) for use with other antiretroviral agents for treatment of HIV-1 infection. A combination of emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (FTC/TDF; Truvada) has been available since 2004 for the same indication. The FDA has approved an intravenous (IV) formulation of acetaminophen (Ofirmev – Cadence) for use in patients ≥2 years old for management of pain either as monotherapy (mild to moderate pain) or with an opioid (moderate to severe pain) and for reduction of fever.

Antiretroviral therapy is recommended for all HIV-infected patients, both to reduce the risk of disease progression and to prevent transmission of the virus to others. Various guidelines for treatment of HIV infection are available.

Four new drugs have become available in the USA for HIV infection or its complications. Nevirapine (Viramune - Roxane), intravenous cidofovir (Vistide - Gilead), and amphotericin B oral suspension (Fungizone Oral Suspension - Bristol-Myers Squibb) have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration; nelfinavir (Viracept - Agouron) is currently available only through an "Expanded Access Program."

Many different drugs are used for treatment of osteoarthritis pain, but none of them prevent progression of the disease. Nonpharmacologic approaches including weight management, exercise, tai chi, physical therapy, assistive devices, and total joint arthroplasty can also be used.
