Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a central-nervous-system depressant notorious for its use in "date rape", was approved by the FDA in 2002 as sodium oxybate (Xyrem - Jazz Pharmaceuticals) for oral treatment of cataplexy in patients with narcolepsy.
