Some recently published studies suggest that taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may increase the risk of developing osteoporosis. A relationship between SSRIs and osteoporosis is biologically plausible because bone has serotonin receptors, and SSRI-treated mice have reduced bone mass.

The US Department of Health and Human Services, in conjunction with the US Department of Agriculture, has released the latest update of its Dietary Guidelines (www.health.gov). The emphasis this time is on weight loss through calorie restriction and exercise. A low-fat intake is recommended; a low-carbohydrate diet is not. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are encouraged. The FDA issued a public health advisory on March 10, 2005 warning about a risk of cancer with topical formulations of tacrolimus (Protopic) and pimecrolimus (Elidel) used to treat eczema in adults and children more than 2 years old. The FDA has approved marketing of Zegerid powder for oral suspension (Santarus), an immediate-release formulation of the proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) omeprazole (Prilosec, and others). All other oral PPIs are delayed-release, enteric-coated formulations designed to prevent degradation of the drug by gastric acid. Each 20- or 40-mg packet of Zegerid contains 1680 mg of sodium bicarbonate, which protects the drug from gastric acid degradation. Azacitidine (Vidaza - Pharmion), a pyrimidine nucleoside analog of cytidine, is the first drug approved by the FDA for treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Azacitidine is incorporated into newly synthesized DNA and inhibits DNA methyltransferase. Hypomethylation of DNA can restore the normal expression of genes critical for cell differentiation.
