The number of immunizations recommended for infants and young children has increased in recent years with the addition of vaccines to prevent Haemophilus influenzae type b infection and hepatitis B (Medical Letter, 33:5, 1991; 34:69, 1992). Now the US Food and Drug Administration has licensed a new vaccine for infants (Tetramune - Lederle-Praxis) that combines a traditional diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis vaccine (DTP; Tri-Immunol) with a vaccine against Haemophilus influenzae type b (HibTiter).

The main goals of treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are to relieve symptoms, reduce the frequency and severity of exacerbations, prevent disease progression, and reduce mortality. GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) guidelines for treatment of COPD were updated recently. Treatment of acute exacerbations is not discussed here. Two recombinant vaccines, Arexvy (GSK) and Abrysvo (Pfizer), have been approved by the FDA for prevention of lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in adults ≥60 years old. They are the first RSV vaccines to be approved in the US. Abrysvo is also approved for use in pregnant women at 32-36 weeks' gestation to prevent LRTD caused by RSV in their infants from birth through 6 months of age.

An unconjugated meningoccocal polysaccharide vaccine (Menomune - Sanofi-Pasteur) has been licensed in the US since 1981.
