Solar ultraviolet (UV) light capable of injuring the skin is classified by wavelength into UVA I (340-400 nm), UVA II (320-340 nm) and UVB (290-320 nm). UVB is responsible for most of the erythema of sunburn. UVA has been implicated in the development of phototoxicity and photoaging. The FDA permits sunscreen manufacturers to claim broad-spectrum protection if their products block at least part of UVA II in addition to UVB.

The ViewPoint CK System (Refractec) for conductive keratoplasty (CK), previously approved by the FDA as a device for treatment of hyperopia (farsightedness), was recently approved for treatment of presbyopia (age-associated loss of ability to view near objects).

Methamphetamine, a highly addictive synthetic sympathomimetic, has again become important as a drug of abuse in the US. Its resurgence has been associated with unsafe sexual practices that have resulted in an increase in HIV transmission, particularly among men who have sex with men (SJ Semple et al, J Subst Abuse Treat 2002; 22:149; A Urbina and K Jones, Clin Infect Dis 2004; 38:890).

Trospium chloride (Sanctura - Indevus/Odyssey) has been approved by the FDA for treatment of overactive bladder with symptoms of urge urinary incontinence, urgency and urinary frequency. It has been available in Europe for many years.

With the removal of Vioxx from the market and concerns about cardiovascular toxicity with other selective COX-2 inhibitors, patients are looking for safe alternatives, and manufacturers of other drugs are looking for additional market share. The COX-2 inhibitors first became popular because they have less upper GI toxicity than older less selective NSAIDs, at least in the short term, in patients not taking aspirin.

Sapropterin (Kuvan - BioMarin) has been approved by the FDA to reduce phenylalanine plasma concentrations in patients with phenylketonuria (PKU). PKU is a rare genetic disorder (it occurs in 1 in 8000 Caucasian and 1 in 50,000 African-American newborns) caused by a deficiency of phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) the resulting high levels of the amino acid in blood and urine lead to cognitive, behavioral and other neurological complications.

Patients are asking physicians about an article on the front page of the June 15th New York Times, in which some prostate cancer experts were quoted as suggesting that men 55 and older might be well advised to take finasteride (Proscar, and others) to prevent prostate cancer.

Fluticasone furoate nasal spray (Veramyst - GSK) is now available for once-daily treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children ≥2 years old. It is similar to fluticasone propionate nasal spray (Flonase, and others), which is now available generically.

Levocetirizine (Xyzal - UCB/Sanofi-aventis), the active enantiomer of the second-generation H₁-antihistamine cetirizine (Zyrtec), has been approved by the FDA for treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis (SAR and PAR) and chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children 6 years of age and older. Cetirizine has been approved by the FDA for over-the-counter use and may also become available generically in the US. Levocetirizine has been available in Europe since 2001.

Poractant alfa intratracheal suspension (Curosurf), a formulation of surfactant available in Europe since 1989, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).
