The FDA has approved Entadfi (Veru), a fixed-dose combination of the 5α-reductase inhibitor finasteride and the phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor tadalafil, for initial treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate; use of the drug is limited to 26 weeks. Entadfi is the first 5α-reductase inhibitor/PDE5 inhibitor combination to become available in the US. Finasteride (Proscar, and generics) and tadalafil (Cialis, and generics) are also available separately.

Valdecoxib (Bextra - Pharmacia/Pfizer), a selective cyclooxygenase (COX-2) inhibitor similar to celecoxib (Celebrex) and rofecoxib (Vioxx), was recently approved by the FDA for treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and primary dysmenorrhea.

The FDA has approved patiromer (Veltassa – Relypsa), an oral potassium binder, for treatment of hyperkalemia. It is the first drug to be approved for this indication since the cation-exchange resin sodium polystyrene sulfonate (Kayexalate, and others) in 1958. Patiromer is not indicated for emergency correction of life-threatening hyperkalemia. Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate, another oral potassium binder, is currently being reviewed by the FDA; a decision on its approval is expected in May 2016.

Coagulation factor Xa (recombinant), inactivated-zhzo (andexanet alfa; Andexxa – Portola) has received accelerated approval from the FDA for urgent reversal of the anticoagulant effect of the direct factor Xa inhibitors apixaban (Eliquis) and rivaroxaban (Xarelto). Andexanet alfa is the second antidote for a direct oral anticoagulant to become available in the US, and the fi rst for factor Xa inhibitors. Rofecoxib (Vioxx - Merck) has been withdrawn from the market due to an increased risk of cardiovascular complications associated with its long-term use.
