The FDA has approved tavaborole 5% solution (Kerydin – Anacor Pharmaceuticals) for topical treatment of toenail onychomycosis due to Trichophyton rubrum or Trichophyton mentagrophytes. It is the first oxaborole antifungal drug to be approved for this indication.

Flosequinan (Manoplax - Boots), a fluoroquinolone derivative, is now available in the USA for treatment of congestive heart failure. Labeling approved by the US Food and Drug Administration recommends the drug only for patients who cannot tolerate or have not responded adequately to an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor.

The FDA has approved a new formulation of fluoxetine for once-weekly maintenance treatment of depression in patients who have responded to daily fluoxetine (Prozac).

Icosapent ethyl (Vascepa [vas EE puh] – Amarin), the ethyl ester of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), has been approved by the FDA as an adjunct to diet for treatment of severe hypertriglyceridemia (≥500 mg/dL). Vascepa is the second omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) product to become available by prescription for this indication; Lovaza (formerly Omacor), which is a combination of the ethyl esters of EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), was the first. Many omega-3 PUFA-containing fish oil capsules are sold over the counter as dietary supplements.

Gadolinium-based contrast agents, which are used mainly for magnetic resonance imaging and angiography, were first introduced partly because of the discovery in the 1990’s that iodine-based contrast agents could cause nephrotoxicity and acute renal failure. The FDA has approved Opill (Perrigo), a progestin-only oral contraceptive that contains norgestrel, for sale over the counter (OTC). Opill is the first oral contraceptive to be approved in the US for sale without a prescription. Approval of OTC Opill is intended to increase access to effective contraception and reduce the rate of unintended pregnancies.

Avmapki Fakzynja Co-Pack (Verastem), a combination of the kinase inhibitors avutometinib and defactinib, has received accelerated approval from the FDA for treatment of KRAS-mutated recurrent low-grade serous ovarian cancer in women who had previously received systemic therapy. Neither drug is approved for use as monotherapy for any indication. Avmapki Fakzynja is the first treatment to be approved in the US for this indication.

The FDA has approved exemestane, an aromatase inhibitor, for the treatment of postmenopausal women with advanced breast cancer that has progressed during treatment with tamoxifen.

Inhaled drugs for asthma are available in the US mainly in pressurized metered-dose inhalers (MDIs), which require a propellant, and dry powder inhalers, which do not. The chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellants in MDIs are being replaced by hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellants for environmental reasons: CFCs contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer.
