Chemotherapy can result in premature menopause and infertility in young women. Pretreatment fertility counseling followed by appropriate action may prevent some of these undesirable consequences.

The FDA has approved the monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitor safinamide (Xadago – US Worldmeds) as an adjunct to levodopa/carbidopa for management of "off" episodes in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). It is the first reversible MAO-B inhibitor to be approved for this indication. Selegiline (Eldepryl, and others) and rasagiline (Azilect, and generics), two irreversible MAO-B inhibitors, have been used alone and as adjuncts to levodopa/carbidopa for many years. Safinamide is not approved for use as monotherapy.

The FDA has approved a two-dose hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine (Heplisav-B – Dynavax) for use in adults ≥18 years old. The three other HBV vaccines marketed in the US are usually administered in 3 doses. Engerix-B and Recombivax HB are licensed for use in persons of all ages. A combination hepatitis A/B vaccine (Twinrix) contains the same hepatitis B component as Engerix-B and is licensed for use only in adults.

The FDA has approved voretigene neparvovec-rzyl intraocular suspension (Luxturna – Spark), an adeno-associated virus vector-based gene therapy, for treatment of confirmed biallelic RPE65 mutation-associated retinal dystrophy in patients who have viable retinal cells. It is the first gene replacement therapy approved in the US that targets a disease caused by mutations in a specific gene and the first pharmacologic treatment to be approved for this disorder.

The FDA has approved a fixed-dose combination of omeprazole, amoxicillin, and rifabutin (Talicia – RedHill) for treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in adults. Talicia is the first rifabutin-based product to be approved for this indication.

Oriahnn (Abbvie), a fixed-dose combination of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonist elagolix, the estrogen estradiol, and the progestin norethindrone acetate copackaged with elagolix alone, has been approved by the FDA for oral treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding associated with uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) in premenopausal women. The FDA has approved a combination oral contraceptive containing the estrogen estetrol and the progestin drospirenone (Nextstellis – Mithra/Mayne). Estetrol is the first new estrogen to become available in the US in 50 years. Drospirenone is available alone (Slynd) and in combinations with the estrogen ethinyl estradiol for prevention of pregnancy.

The FDA has approved the oral second-generation antipsychotic drug brexpiprazole (Rexulti – Otsuka/Lundbeck) for once-daily treatment of agitation associated with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Brexpiprazole is the first drug to be approved in the US for this indication. It is also approved for treatment of schizophrenia and as an adjunct to antidepressants for treatment of major depressive disorder.

Two new drugs alendronate (Fosamax - Merck) and salmon calcitonin nasalspray (Miacalcin - Sandoz) are now available in the USA for treatment of postmenopausalosteoporosis. A third drug for treatment of osteoporosis, a slow-release fluoridepreparation (Slow Fluoride -Mission Pharmacal), has been recommended for approvalby an advisory committee of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Various formulationsof fluoride have been available in Europe for this indication for many years.
