The FDA has approved a fixed-dose extended-release formulation of oxycodone and acetaminophen (Xartemis XR – Mallinckrodt) for oral treatment of acute pain severe enough to require an opioid. Oxycodone is available in the US as a single entity in oral immediate-release (Oxecta, and others) and extendedrelease (OxyContin) formulations. Immediate-release oxycodone is also available in combination with aspirin (Percodan, and others), acetaminophen (Percocet, and others), or ibuprofen (see Table 1).

Modafinil (Provigil - Cephalon; Alertec - Draxis in Canada), first approved by the FDA in 1999 for treatment of excessive daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy (Medical Letter 1999; 41:30), has now also been approved for treatment of patients with excessive sleepiness due to obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) or shift work sleep disorder (SWSD) (DSM-IV, text revision, Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Association, 2000, page 622).

The FDA has approved the marketing of fentanyl sublingual tablets (Abstral – ProStrakan) for treatment of breakthrough pain in adult cancer patients who are already receiving and are tolerant to opioid therapy. It is the fourth transmucosal formulation of fentanyl to become available in the US for this indication.1-3The manufacturer recommends an initial dose of 100 mcg, a maximum of 2 doses per breakthrough pain episode, and use for no more than 4 breakthrough pain episodes per day. The FDA has approved opicapone (Ongentys – Neurocrine), a peripherally-acting reversible catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor, for oral use as an adjunct to carbidopa/levodopa in adults with Parkinson’s disease (PD) who experience "off" episodes. It is the third COMT inhibitor to be approved for this indication; tolcapone (Tasmar, and generics) and entacapone (Comtan, and generics) were approved earlier. Opicapone has been available in Europe since 2016.

The FDA has approved a new formulation of carbidopa/levodopa (Rytary – Impax) in extended-release capsules for treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD).

The FDA has approved marketing of the corticosteroid mometasone furoate in an orally inhaled dry powder formulation (Asmanex Twisthaler - Schering-Plough) for maintenance treatment of asthma in patients at least 12 years old. Mometasone is also available as a mid-potency topical corticosteroid cream (Elocon) and as an intranasal spray (Nasonex) for treatment of allergic rhinitis.

The short-acting beta2-agonist albuterol sulfate is now available as a dry powder for inhalation (ProAir RespiClick – Teva) for prevention and treatment of broncho spasm in patients ≥12 years old. ProAir RespiClick is the only short-acting beta2-agonist dry powder inhaler available in the US.Metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) use a hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) propellant. The FDA has approved Duzallo (Ironwood), a fixed-dose combination of the uric acid transporter 1 (URAT1) inhibitor lesinurad (Zurampic) and the xanthine oxidase inhibitor allopurinol (Zyloprim, and generics), for once-daily treatment of gout-associated hyperuricemia in patients who have not achieved target serum uric acid levels with allopurinol alone.

Anidulafungin (ay nid yoo la fun jin; Eraxis - Pfizer), a third intravenous echinocandin antifungal, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of esophageal candidiasis, candidemia, and other complicated Candida infections (intra-abdominal abscess or peritonitis).
