Glatiramer acetate (Copaxone - Teva Marion Partners), formerly known as copolymer-l, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). Interferon β-1b (Betaseron) and interferon β-1a (Avonex - Medical Letter, 38:63, 1996) were previously approved for this indication.

A reader commented that our recent article on Drugs for GERD and Peptic Ulcer Disease did not include enough information on dexlansoprazole (Dexilant, and generics), a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) claimed to provide "all-day and all-night relief from heartburn". Dexlansoprazole recently became available generically, but it is much more expensive than other generic PPIs.

Risperidone (Risperdal - Janssen), a benzisoxazole derivative, is now available in the USA for treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

Betaxolol (Kerlone - Searle), an oral beta-adrenergic blocker, was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for once-daily treatment of hypertension. The new drug is beta 1 (cardio)-selective with no intrinsic sympathomimetic (partial agonist) activity. It is also available in a topical formulation for treatment of glaucoma (Betoptic - Medical Letter, 28:45, 1986). With the possibility that chemical weapons may be used against United States armed forces in the Persian Gulf, the military has taken steps to protect our troops against poison gas, particularly ''nerve agents';'; (MA Dunn and FR Sidell, JAMA, 262:649, 1989).

Vardenafil (Levitra -Bayer) is the second oral drug approved by the FDA for treatment of erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil (Viagra - Medical Letter 1998; 40:51), the first oral drug, has been available for 5 years. Pharmacokinetics, effectiveness, adverse effects, dosage and cost of the new drug are reviewed. Whether it offers any benefits over sildenafil is discussed.

Tadalafil (Cialis - Lilly Icos) is the third oral drug to be approved by the FDA for treatment of erectile dysfunction. It has a longer duration of action than sildenafil (Viagra) or vardenafil (Levitra - Medical Letter 2003; 45:77).

The FDA has approved insulin degludec (Tresiba – Novo Nordisk) for treatment of adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Insulin degludec is the third long-acting human insulin analog to be approved by the FDA; insulin detemir (Levemir) and insulin glargine (Lantus, Toujeo) were approved earlier.

A drug that combines the neutral sulfate salts of dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine with the dextro isomer of amphetamine saccharate and d,l amphetamine aspartate (Adderall - Richwood Pharmaceutical) has recently been promoted for treatment of children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This same mixture of amphetamine salts was previously marketed as Obetrol for treatment of obesity.
