The FDA has approved Synjardy (Boehringer Ingelheim/Lilly), a fixed-dose combination of the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor empagliflozin (Jardiance) and metformin (Glucophage, and others), for treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes not adequately controlled on either of these drugs alone or already being treated with both empagliflozin and metformin. It is the third SGLT2 inhibitor/metformin combination to be approved in the US.

The FDA has approved Arymo ER (Egalet), a new extended-release, abuse-deterrent tablet formulation of morphine sulfate, for management of pain severe enough to require daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment and for which alternative treatment options are inadequate. Arymo ER can only be marketed to deter abuse by injection because another single-entity, extended-release morphine product, MorphaBond, which has not been marketed to date, has marketing exclusivity for deterrence of abuse by the intranasal route through October 2018.

The FDA has approved a subcutaneously administered 20% solution of human immune globulin (Cuvitru – Shire) for replacement therapy in patients ≥2 years old with a primary humoral immunodeficiency. Hizentra (CSL Behring), another subcutaneously administered 20% immune globulin solution, was approved in 2010 for the same indication. The FDA has approved intravenously administered recombinant von Willebrand factor (Vonvendi - Shire) for adults with von Willebrand disease (VWD) who require on-demand treatment and control of bleeding episodes. It is the first recombinant von Willebrand factor (VWF) product to become available in the US.

The FDA has approved Fiasp (Novo Nordisk), a new formulation of insulin aspart, to improve glycemic control in adults with diabetes. Fiasp is described by the manufacturer as faster-acting than conventional insulin aspart (Novolog).

The FDA has approved secnidazole oral granules (Solosec – Symbiomix/Lupin) for single-dose treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV) in adult women.

The FDA has approved the new aminoglycoside antibiotic plazomicin (Zemdri – Achaogen) for IV treatment of adults with complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs). Plazomicin is active against multi-drug- resistant Enterobacteriaceae, including strains resistant to other aminoglycosides.
