The FDA has approved ibalizumab-uiyk (Trogarzo – Theratechnologies/TaiMed), a CD4-directed monoclonal antibody, for IV treatment of multidrug-resistant HIV-1 (MDR-HIV) infection in heavily antiretroviral-experienced adults with treatment failure on their current regimen. Ibalizumab-uiyk is the first biologic drug to be approved by the FDA for treatment of HIV-1 infection.

Infertility occurs in about 15% of couples. About one third of infertility is due to problems with ovulation or an anatomic abnormality of the fallopian tube or peritoneum, such as scarring, adhesions or endometriosis. Another third is due to a male infertility factor, most commonly insufficient sperm production or abnormal motility or morphology. The remaining third is unexplained. In older women unexplained infertility is probably caused by diminished quality and quantity of oocytes, decreased implantation and spontaneous pregnancy wastage.

The main goals of treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are to relieve symptoms, reduce the frequency and severity of exacerbations, prevent disease progression, and reduce mortality. GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) guidelines for treatment of COPD were updated recently. Treatment of acute exacerbations is not discussed here. Drugs available for treatment of COPD are listed in Tables 1 and 3.

Mesalamine (Rowasa - Reid-Rowell), probably better known as 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and also called mesalazine in some other countries, was recently marketed in the USA as an enema for treatment of mild to moderate distal ulcerative colitis, including ulcerative proctosigmoiditis and ulcerative proctitis.

Nefazodone (Serzone - Bristol-Myers Squibb) was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of depression. A phenylpiperazine, nefazodone is chemically related to trazodone (Desyrel, and others).

Losartan potassium (Cozaar - Merck), the first angiotensin II receptor antagonist, has been approved for oral treatment of hypertension by the US Food and Drug Administration. It will be marketed both alone and in a fixed-dose combination with the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (Hyzaar).

Zafirlukast (za fir loo kast; Accolate - Zeneca), the first leukotriene receptor anta-gonist approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, is now being heavily promoted for oral maintenance treatment of chronic asthma in patients more than 12 years old. It is not recommended for treatment of acute asthma.

Mirtazapine (mir taz a peen; Remeron - Organon) has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of depression. A tetracyclic piperazinoazepine, it is an analog of mianserin, an antidepressant available in Europe, but is structurally unrelated to antidepressants previously available in the USA.

Pramipexole (Mirapex - Pharmacia & Upjohn) and ropinirole (Requip - SmithKline Beecham), two new dopamine agonists, have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of both early (without levodopa) and advanced (with levodopa) Parkinson's disease. Bromocriptine (Parlodel) and pergolide (Permax) are older dopamine agonists marketed in the USA for adjunctive use with levodopa.

Cerivastatin (Baycol - Bayer), a new HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (or "statin"), has been approved by the FDA for treatment of hypercholesterolemia. Cerivastatin is the sodium salt of a synthetic fluorophenyl pyridinyl-substituted heptanoic acid.
