A transdermal patch formulation of methylphenidate (Daytrana - Noven/Shire) has been approved by the FDA for treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in patients ≥ 6 years old. Like other methylphenidate products, the patch is a schedule II controlled substance. According to the manufacturer, it will be available in pharmacies by the end of June.

Natalizumab (Tysabri - Elan and Biogen) is a monoclonal antibody approved for induction and maintenance treatment of moderate to severe Crohn's disease (CD) refractory to conventional therapies and inhibitors of tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Initially approved in 2004 for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), natalizumab was temporarily withdrawn from the market after 3 patients developed progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). It is now available for treatment of both MS and CD through a restricted distribution program.

The FDA has approved Byvalson (Allergan), a fixed-dose combination of the beta blocker nebivolol (Bystolic) and the angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) valsartan (Diovan, and generics), for treatment of hypertension. The FDA has approved cladribine (Mavenclad – EMD Serono), a purine antimetabolite, for oral treatment of adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including relapsing-remitting disease and active secondary progressive MS (SPMS), who cannot tolerate or have had an inadequate response to other drugs indicated for treatment of MS. It is not recommended for use in patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS). IV cladribine, which is FDA-approved for treatment of hairy cell leukemia, has been used off-label for treatment of MS.

The FDA has approved Anjeso (Baudax Bio), an IV formulation of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) meloxicam, for once-daily treatment of moderate to severe pain in adults. Oral meloxicam (Mobic, and others), which is only indicated for treatment of chronic pain associated with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, has been available for 20 years. IV formulations of ketorolac, ibuprofen (Caldolor), and acetaminophen (Ofirmev) are also available for treatment of pain.
