Tegaserod maleate (teg a ser' od; Zelnorm - Novartis), a serotonin derivative, has received FDA approval for short-term treatment of women with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) whose primary symptom is constipation. Alosetron (Lotronex), which was withdrawn previously because of toxicity, will soon be available again for women with severe diarrhea-predominant IBS (Medical Letter 2002; 44:67).

Millions of people now take herbal products and other "dietary supplements." The Physicians' Desk Reference has published a PDR for Herbal Medicines listing their ingredients and indications, and the Drug Topics Red Book lists their prices.

Daptomycin (Cubicin - Cubist), a cyclic lipopeptide (a new class of antibiotics), has been approved by the FDA for intravenous (IV) treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections. It is being promoted as a once-daily bactericidal alternative to vancomycin (Vancocin, and others) for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureusinfections.

Epinastine HCl, an H₁-receptor antagonist and mast cell stabilizer, has been approved by the FDA for use in a 0.05% ophthalmic solution (Elestat - Allergan/Inspire) for prevention of itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis. The drug is available orally in Europe and Asia.

Some patients with primary immune deficiency are injected with intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) every 3-4 weeks. Now a subcutaneous immune globulin (SCIG) has also been approved in the US for this indication (Vivaglobin - CSL Behring). SCIG has been used in Europe for about 10 years.

Brivaracetam (Briviact – UCB), an analog of levetiracetam (Keppra, and others), has been approved by the FDA for adjunctive treatment of partial-onset seizures in patients ≥16 years old. New drugs for epilepsy are often approved initially only as adjunctive treatment for partial seizures.

The FDA has approved an extended-release orally disintegrating tablet formulation of methylphenidate (Cotempla XR-ODT – Neos Therapeutics) for once-daily treatment of attention-defi cit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children 6-17 years old. Cotempla XR-ODT is the first extended-release orally disintegrating tablet formulation of methylphenidate to become available in the US.

The FDA has approved cyclosporine 0.09% ophthalmic solution (Cequa – Sun) to increase tear production in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye disease). Restasis, a 0.05% cyclosporine emulsion, was approved in the US in 2003 for the same indication.
