The FDA has approved Byvalson (Allergan), a fixed-dose combination of the beta blocker nebivolol (Bystolic) and the angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) valsartan (Diovan, and generics), for treatment of hypertension. It is the only combination product that contains nebivolol, and the first to combine a beta blocker with an ARB.

The FDA has approved two new drugs for treatment of previously-treated unresectable or metastatic human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer: fam-trastuzumab deruxtecannxki (Enhertu – Daiichi-Sankyo/AstraZeneca), an IV HER2-directed monoclonal antibody linked to the topoisomerase I inhibitor DXd, and tucatinib (Tukysa – Seagen), an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor.

The FDA has approved opicapone (Ongentys – Neurocrine), a peripherally-acting reversible catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor, for oral use as an adjunct to carbidopa/levodopa in adults with Parkinson’s disease (PD) who experience "off" episodes. It is the third COMT inhibitor to be approved for this indication; tolcapone (Tasmar, and generics) and entacapone (Comtan, and generics) were approved earlier. Opicapone has been available in Europe since 2016.

The FDA has approved Cabenuva (ViiV Healthcare), an extended-release formulation of the new integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) cabotegravir copackaged with an extended-release formulation of the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) rilpivirine, as a once-monthly complete regimen for intramuscular (IM) treatment of adults with HIV-1 infection who are virologically suppressed (HIV-1 RNA...

The FDA has approved oteseconazole (Vivjoa – Mycovia), a new oral azole antifungal, to reduce the incidence of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) in females with a history of RVVC. Oteseconazole is the first drug to be approved in the US specifically for treatment of RVVC.

The FDA has approved the subcutaneously injected interleukin (IL)-4 receptor alpha antagonist dupilumab (Dupixent – Sanofi/Regeneron) for treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in patients ≥12 years old who weigh ≥40 kg and treatment of prurigo nodularis in adults. Dupilumab is the first drug to be approved in the US for each of these indications. It is also FDA-approved for treatment of atopic dermatitis, asthma, and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis.

Bexagliflozin (Brenzavvy – TheracosBio), a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, has been approved by the FDA to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is the fifth SGLT2 inhibitor to be approved in the US for this indication (see Table 4).

The FDA has approved sotatercept-csrk (Winrevair – Merck), a first-in-class activin signaling inhibitor, to increase exercise capacity, improve WHO functional class, and reduce the risk of clinical worsening events in adults with WHO Group 1 pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

Smoking tobacco remains the primary preventable cause of death in the US. Smoking cessation often requires both pharmacotherapy and behavioral support.

Podofilox 0.5% solution (Condylox - Oclassen) was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of (condylomata acuminata). The drug requires a prescription, but is labeled for application by the patient. Similar topical solutions previously available for this indication are approved only for application by the physician.
