The FDA has approved sotatercept-csrk (Winrevair – Merck), a first-in-class activin signaling inhibitor, to increase exercise capacity, improve WHO functional class, and reduce the risk of clinical worsening events in adults with WHO Group 1 pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommend using insect repellents to prevent infections transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks. Insect repellents applied to exposed skin should be used in conjunction with other preventive measures such as wearing pants and long-sleeved shirts and avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito-biting times. Mosquitoes can transmit diseasecausing pathogens, including Zika, chikungunya, dengue, West Nile, eastern equine encephalitis, and yellow fever viruses, and the malaria parasite....

Podofilox 0.5% solution (Condylox - Oclassen) was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of (condylomata acuminata). The drug requires a prescription, but is labeled for application by the patient. Similar topical solutions previously available for this indication are approved only for application by the physician.

A 0.05% ophthalmic solution of levocabastine hydrochloride (Livostin - Iolab), a histamine H 1 -receptor antagonist, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. The new drug is a cyclohexylpiperidine derivative with no structural relationship to any other antihistamine.

Imiquimod (i mi kwi' mod) 5% cream (Aldara - 3M Pharmaceuticals) has been approved by the FDA for treatment of external genital and perianal warts (condyloma acuminata). The drug requires a prescription but is applied by the patient. It is the second patient-applied treatment to become available for external genital warts; the first was podofilox (Condylox - Medical Letter, 33:117, 1991).

Irbesartan (Avapro - Sanofi/Bristol-Myers Squibb) is the third angiotensin II receptor antagonist to become available in the USA for oral treatment of hypertension. Losartan (Cozaar) and valsartan (Diovan) were marketed earlier. Eprosartan (Teveten - SmithKline Beecham) has been approved by the FDA but not marketed.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that measles outbreaks have occurred in New York City, California and Arizona in 2008, and additional cases have been confirmed in Michigan, Wisconsin, Hawaii, New York State, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Virginia (CDC Health Advisory, May 1, 2008). To date, 63 of the 64 infected patients were unvaccinated, and 54 of the cases were associated with importation of the disease. Many patients with hypertension require more than one drug to control their blood pressure. Tribenzor (Daiichi Sankyo), recently approved by the FDA for treatment of hypertension, combines the calcium channel blocker amlodipine (Norvasc, and others), the angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) olmesartan (Benicar)and the most commonly prescribed diuretic, hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). Tribenzor is not approved for initial therapy, but is recommended for patients not adequately controlled on any 2-drug combination of a calcium channel blocker, an ARB or a diuretic.

The FDA has approved the use of dalfampridine (4-aminopyridine; Ampyra – Acorda), a potassium channel blocker, to improve walking speed in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Walking speed is considered a reliable clinical measure of impairment in patients with MS.
