The FDA has approved the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor alogliptin (Nesina – Takeda) for treatment of type 2 diabetes. In addition to the single-ingredient product, the FDA also approved fixed-dose combinations of alogliptin/metformin (Kazano) and alogliptin/pioglitazone (Oseni) for the same indication. Alogliptin is the fourth DPP-4 inhibitor to become available in the US. The other three – saxagliptin (Onglyza), sitagliptin (Januvia), and linagliptin (Tradjenta) – are also available in fixed-dose combinations with metformin.

The FDA has approved the marketing of fenofibric acid (Trilipix - Abbott) to reduce triglycerides and increase HDL-C in patients with mixed dyslipidemia on optimal doses of a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) who have, or have risk factors for, coronary heart disease. It is the first fibrate approved by the FDA specifically for combined use with a statin. Trilipix is also approved as monotherapy for hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia and low HDL-C. The patent for Tricor, Abbott's older formulation of fenofibrate, will expire in 2011.

It is the second VMAT2 inhibitor to be approved for each of these indications; tetrabenazine (Xenazine, and generics) was approved earlier for Huntington's chorea and valbenazine (Ingrezza) was recently approved for treatment of adults with tardive dyskinesia.

The FDA has approved a rectal foam formulation of the corticosteroid budesonide (Uceris - Salix/Valeant) for induction of remission in patients with active mild to moderate distal ulcerative colitis (UC) extending up to 40 cm from the anal verge. Budesonide is also available as oral extended-release tablets (also branded as Uceris) for use in patients with UC and as oral enteric-coated tablets (Entocort EC, and generics) for treatment of Crohn's disease.

The oral kinase inhibitor alpelisib (Vijoice – Novartis) has been approved by the FDA for treatment of patients ≥2 years old with severe manifestations of PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum (PROS) who require systemic treatment. Alpelisib is the first drug to be approved in the US for this indication. It was also approved in 2019 as Piqray for use in combination with fulvestrant for treatment of certain types of breast cancer.
