The FDA has approved clesrovimab-cfor (Enflonsia – Merck), a long-acting monoclonal antibody, for prevention of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in neonates and infants born during or entering their first RSV season. Clesrovimab is the second drug to be approved for this indication; nirsevimab (Beyfortus), another long-acting monoclonal antibody, was the first. Palivizumab (Synagis), a shorter-acting antibody, is FDA-approved for prevention of severe RSV LRTI in certain high-risk children ≤24 months old.

Eravacycline (Xerava – Tetraphase), a new synthetic tetracycline antibiotic, has been approved by the FDA for IV treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs) in adults. The FDA has approved Mavyret (Abbvie) and Vosevi (Gilead), two new fixed-dose combinations of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) drugs, for treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection caused by any of the six major HCV genotypes in patients without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis. Both are approved for use in treatment-experienced patients. Mavyret is also approved for treatment-naive patients.

The FDA has approved Technivie (Abbvie), a fixed-dose combination of the direct-acting antiviral agents ombitasvir and paritaprevir and the pharmacokinetic enhancer ritonavir, for oral treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 4 infection in patients without cirrhosis. It is indicated for use in combination with ribavirin. The FDA has approved Kimyrsa (Melinta), a new IV formulation of the long-acting lipoglycopeptide antibiotic oritavancin, for treatment of adults with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections caused by susceptible gram-positive bacteria. Orbactiv (Melinta), another IV formulation of oritavancin, was approved in 2014 for the same indication. Kimyrsa has a smaller infusion volume (250 mL vs 1 L) and a shorter infusion time (1 hour vs 3 hours) compared to Orbactiv (see Table 1).

The FDA has approved Dovato (ViiV), a fixed-dose combination of the integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) dolutegravir (Tivicay) and the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) lamivudine (Epivir, and generics), as a once-daily complete regimen for treatment of adults with HIV-1 infection who are antiretroviral-treatment naive and have no known substitutions associated with resistance to either drug.
