Full-page newspaper advertisements are urging patients with high cholesterol levels who are stopping Baycol (cerivastatin) to ask their doctors about Pravachol (pravastatin), Lipitor (atorvastatin), Zocor (simvastatin) or Lescol (fluvastatin). Some advertisements come with a coupon for free medication. Lovastatin, which is available generically, has not appeared in similar advertisements. Cerivastatin was withdrawn from the market on August 8 because of post-marketing reports of 31 cases of fatal rhabdomyolysis.

The FDA has approved apixaban (Eliquis – Bristol-Myers Squibb/Pfizer), an oral direct factor Xa inhibitor, for prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. It is the third new oral anticoagulant to be approved for this indication as an alternative to warfarin.

The lipid-lowering drug rosuvastatin is now available in a sprinkle capsule formulation (Ezallor Sprinkle – Sun Pharma). Rosuvastatin tablets (Crestor, and generics) have been available since 2003.1,2The new formulation is being marketed specifically for residents of long-term care facilities who have difficulty swallowing. The FDA has approved vonoprazan, a potassium-competitive acid blocker, copackaged with amoxicillin (Voquezna Dual Pak – Phathom) and with amoxicillin and clarithromycin (Voquezna Triple Pak) for treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in adults. Vonoprazan is the first potassium-competitive acid blocker to be approved in the US. It has been available in Japan for treatment of various acid-related disorders since 2014. Vonoprazan is not available alone in the US.

Budesonide (Entocort EC — AstraZeneca), a locally active glucocorticosteriod widely used for inhalation treatment of allergic rhinitis and asthma (Medical Letter 2000; 42:19), has been approved for oral treatment of mild to moderate active Crohn's disease involving the ileum and/or ascending colon. Both oral budesonide and budesonide enemas have been available for years in Europe and Canada for treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

The FDA has approved darolutamide (Nubeqa – Bayer), an androgen receptor inhibitor, for oral treatment of nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC). Darolutamide is the third androgen receptor inhibitor to be approved for this indication; apalutamide (Erleada) and enzalutamide (Xtandi), which are also approved for use in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), were approved earlier.

Bosentan (Tracleer - Actelion), a non-peptide endothelin receptor antagonist, has been approved by the FDA for oral treatment of patients who have pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) with symptoms of dyspnea at rest or with minimal exertion.

Aprepitant (Emend - Merck), the first substance P/neurokinin 1 (NK₁) receptor antagonist to be approved by the FDA, is now available for oral use with corticosteroids and selective serotonin (5-HT₃) receptor antagonists to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by highly emetogenic anticancer drugs such as cisplatin.

The FDA has approved the marketing of extended release (ER) ranolazine (Ranexa - CV Therapeutics) for treatment of chronic angina in patients who have not achieved an adequate response with other antianginal drugs. It should be used in combination with a nitrate, a beta-blocker or the dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker amlodipine (Norvasc), and appears to be more effective in men. The labeling for ranolazine specifies amlodipine as the calcium-channel blocker of choice because the use of other dihydropyridines with ranolazine has not been studied, and use with diltiazem (Cardizem, and...

Implanon (Organon), an implantable contraceptive containing the progestin etonogestrel, has been approved by the FDA. Two other implantable contraceptives, Norplant and Jadelle, which both contain levonorgestrel, are FDA-approved but not marketed in the US.
