Electronic reading machines that convert print into speech have become increasingly useful for blind, other visually impaired, or dyslexic patients. Some of these devices are available as components that can be added to a personal computer.

Unlike new drugs, new techniques for surgery do not need the approval of any government agency. Use of alendronate (Fosamax), estrogen and other drugs for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis (Medical Letter, 38:1, 1996) has been accompanied by widespread availability of bone density screening tests, not only in doctors offices and hospitals, but even in retail stores. Bone densitometry provides a quantitative measurement of bone mineralization that can be used to predict the risk of osteoporotic fractures.

The FDA has approved cladribine (Mavenclad – EMD Serono), a purine antimetabolite, for oral treatment of adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including relapsing-remitting disease and active secondary progressive MS (SPMS), who cannot tolerate or have had an inadequate response to other drugs indicated for treatment of MS. It is not recommended for use in patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS). IV cladribine, which is FDA-approved for treatment of hairy cell leukemia, has been used off-label for treatment of MS.

This article includes recommendations for management of most sexually transmitted infections (STIs) other than HIV and viral hepatitis. Some of the indications and dosages recommended here have not been approved by the FDA (see Table 1).

Mild to moderate plaque psoriasis can be treated with topical drugs and phototherapy. Patients with moderate to severe disease generally require systemic therapy. Guidelines for the treatment of psoriasis with topical therapy, phototherapy, and systemic drugs have recently been published.

Terazosin (Hytrin - Abbott), a postsynaptic alpha 1 -adrenoreceptor blocker previ-ously available for treatment of hypertension (Medical Letter, 29:113, 1987), has now been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Although not previously approved by the FDA, terazosin and other alpha-blockers such as prazosin (Minipress, and others) or doxazosin (Car-dura) have been used for this indication for many years.
