Ecamsule (terephthalylidene dicamphor sulfonic acid), the first new sunscreen agent to be approved by the FDA in 18 years, is now available in the US in a moisturizer called Anthelios SX. Ecamsule has been used in Canada and Europe for more than 10 years.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are used for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and for prevention of upper gastrointestinal adverse effects caused by NSAIDs and aspirin, are one of the most commonly prescribed classes of drugs in the US. All PPIs are similarly effective and generally well tolerated, but their long-term use has been associated with a number of safety concerns. Recommendations addressing these concerns have recently been published.

The primary symptoms of menopause are genitourinary and vasomotor. The genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) includes symptoms such as burning, irritation, dryness, dyspareunia, dysuria, and recurrent urinary tract infection. Vasomotor symptoms (VMS; hot flashes, night sweats) often disrupt sleep.

The FDA has approved testosterone undecanoate (Aveed – Endo), an injectable depot formulation, for use in men with hypogonadism who require testosterone replacement therapy.

Budesonide (Entocort EC — AstraZeneca), a locally active glucocorticosteriod widely used for inhalation treatment of allergic rhinitis and asthma (Medical Letter 2000; 42:19), has been approved for oral treatment of mild to moderate active Crohn's disease involving the ileum and/or ascending colon. Both oral budesonide and budesonide enemas have been available for years in Europe and Canada for treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

Givinostat (Duvyzat – Italfarmaco), an oral histone deacetylase inhibitor, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of patients ≥6 years old with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), regardless of the DMD-causing mutation. It is the first nonsteroidal drug to be approved for this indication. The oral corticosteroids deflazacort (Emflaza) and vamorolone (Agamree) are also approved for treatment of patients with all genetic variants of DMD.

The FDA has approved Juluca (ViiV Healthcare/Janssen), a fixed-dose combination of the integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) dolutegravir (Tivicay) and the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) rilpivirine (Edurant), as a once-daily complete regimen for treatment of adults with HIV-1 infection who do not have a history of treatment failure or known substitutions associated with resistance to either drug and have been taking a stable suppressive antiretroviral regimen for ≥6 months. An oral formulation of testosterone undecanoate (Jatenzo – Clarus) has been approved by the FDA for treatment of adult men with conditions associated with a deficiency of endogenous testosterone, such as Klinefelter syndrome, orchiectomy, toxic damage from chemotherapy or alcohol, or pituitary-hypothalamic injury from tumors, trauma, or radiation. Jatenzo is not approved for treatment of low testosterone levels solely due to aging. It is the first oral testosterone formulation to be approved in the US.
