In Brief: Two New Seasonal Influenza Vaccines

The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics • Feb 04, 2013  (Issue 1409)
in healthy adults: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Vaccine 2011; 29:7733. 2. Influenza vaccine 2012 ...
Two new trivalent influenza vaccines, Flucelvax (Novartis) and Flublok (Protein Sciences), will soon be available for prevention of seasonal influenza in adults ≥18 years old (Flucelvax) and 18-49 years old (Flublok). Unlike other available influenza vaccines, neither vaccine is produced in eggs, removing any concern regarding use in egg-allergic patients. Avoiding the use of eggs should allow for faster production of these 2 new vaccines, which could be especially beneficial during a pandemic.Flucelvax is prepared in a similar manner to other influenza vaccines, but the influenza virus is...

The heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Prevnar - Wyeth) previously approved by the FDA for prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease in infants and children (Medical Letter 2000; 42:25) has now also been approved for prevention of otitis media. Infants and young children have higher antibody responses to the heptavalent conjugate vaccine (PCV7) than to the older 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) used in adults and older children (D Murray and C Jackson, Mil Med 2002; 167:671).

The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics • Jun 18, 2018  (Issue 1549)
In Brief: A Potentially Fatal Immune Reaction to Lamotrigine ...
The FDA has warned that the antiepileptic and mood-stabilizing drug lamotrigine (Lamictal, and generics) can rarely cause hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a serious and potentially fatal immune-related reaction.1HLH, which can be familial, occurs most often in infants, but can occur at any age. Often induced by Epstein-Barr Virus infection (HIV infection and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are other common triggers), HLH is characterized by an unremitting activation of CD8+ T cells and macrophages.2 If untreated, it causes organ damage, particularly in the liver, bone marrow, and CNS; organ...
