Dezocine (Dalgan - Astra), a new synthetic opioid agonist/antagonist structurally related to pentazocine (Talwin), was recently approved for parenteral use as an analgesic by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Sibutramine hydrochlorid monohydreate (Meridia - Knoll), which is structurally related to amphetamine, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of obesity. It is classified by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) as a schedule IV controlled substance.

Sodium phenylbutyrate, an "orphan drug,"has recently been marketed for the treatment of patients with urea cycle disorders caused by a deficiency in one of the following hepatic enzymes: carbamyl phosphate synthetase (CPS), ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC), or argininosuccinic acid synthetase (AS). Urea cycle disorders are rare; they occur in one of every 10,000 births.

The results of a large randomized controlled trial of estrogen plus a progestin to prevent heart disease in postmenopausal women were recently reported (Writing Group for the Women's Health Initiative Investigators, JAMA 2002; 288:321).

Epcoritamab-bysp (Epkinly – Genmab), a bispecific CD20-directed CD3 T-cell engager, has received accelerated approval from the FDA for subcutaneous treatment of relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), not otherwise specified, including DLBCL arising from indolent lymphoma, and high-grade B-cell lymphoma after ≥2 lines of systemic therapy. Epcoritamab is the second T-cell-engaging bispecific antibody to become available in the US for treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; mosunetuzumab-axgb (Lunsumio) was recently approved for relapsed or refractory...

The FDA has licensed the pentavalent vaccine Penmenvy (GSK) for prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, B, C, W, or Y (MenABCWY) in persons 10-25 years old. Penmenvy is the second pentavalent meningococcal vaccine to become available in the US; Penbraya was licensed in 2023.

Benazepril (Lotensin - Ciba-Geigy), fosinopril (Monopril - Mead Johnson), and - Hoechst, Upjohn) are new angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for once-a-day treatment of hypertension. Three other ACE inhibitors, captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), and lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril) were previously available in the USA for this indication. Captopril and enalapril have also been approved by the FDA for treatment of congestive heart failure.

In 2007, Merck voluntarily recalled some lots of PedvaxHIB and Comvax, two Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccines, and temporarily stopped their production because of possible contamination, resulting in a shortage during which pediatricians were urged to defer giving Hib booster doses (normally given at 12-15 months) to healthy children. Now the FDA has granted accelerated licensure of Hiberix (GlaxoSmithKline), a monovalent vaccine conjugated with tetanus toxoid that has been used in Europe since 1996, as a booster (final) dose of the Hib series in children 15 months-4 years old....

Micronized fenofibrate (Tricor - Abbott), a fibric acid derivative structurally similar to clofibrate (Atromid-S, and others) and gemfibrozil (Lopid, and others), has been approved by the FDA for treatment of hypertriglyceridemia. Increased serum triglyceride concentrations have been associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease (J Jeppesen et al, Circulation, 97:1029, 1998).

Quinupristin and dalfopristin, two streptogramin antibacterials marketed in a 30:70 combination as Synercid, have received accelerated approval from the FDA for intravenous treatment of bacteremia and life-threatening infection....
